The new school year in Saudi Arabia now begins with a health check as well as a timetable. The Ministry of Health, working with the Ministry of Education and the Public Health Authority, has completed the school fitness screening for new students across the Kingdom, a nationwide check that helps confirm every first-grader is ready for the classroom. For parents, the result is more than a form to file. It is an early, honest picture of your child's health, and a clear starting point for building active habits at home and in the gym.

Here is what the screening actually measures, what this year's numbers tell us, how to book it through the Sehhaty app, and how to turn a single result into a routine your child will keep.

What the school fitness screening checks

The screening is a full school-entry health check, not a quick weigh-in. The Ministry of Health says the programme is built around the early detection of auditory, visual, mental or physical issues that could affect how well a child settles into school. In practice, it covers several things in one visit:

  • Body mass index (BMI), to flag under-weight or over-weight early
  • A vision, or visual acuity, test
  • A hearing test
  • A speech and articulation check
  • A dental and oral health examination
  • A general clinical examination
  • Verification of the child's vaccinations against the National Immunization Schedule
  • A review of medical and family history

Each of these can shape how a child learns. A child who cannot see the board clearly, or who cannot hear the teacher, can struggle for reasons that have nothing to do with ability, which is exactly why the check happens before day one.

What this year's screening tells us

The scale of the programme is national. According to Arab News, the Ministry of Health completed checks for more than 355,000 students, with 96 percent of basic vaccinations administered across the group. The Ministry describes the effort as part of the Health Sector Transformation Program under Vision 2030, a wider push to catch health issues early and build a more active, healthier society.

For a parent, the takeaway is simple. This is a system designed to spot problems while they are still easy to act on, and the screening result is your invitation to do exactly that.

How to book the school fitness screening

Booking is done through the Sehhaty app, the Ministry of Health's health platform, so most of the process happens on your phone.

  1. Open the Sehhaty app and choose the school fitness screening for your child.
  2. Pick a time and the primary healthcare centre that suits you.
  3. Attend the centre with your child and their guardian.
  4. Bring the family ID card or residence permit and the original vaccination certificate.

After the examination, families receive guidance based on the results, along with a referral to a specialist where one is needed.

Turn the result into a weekly habit

A screening is a snapshot. What happens next is where the real health is built, and this is the part the official announcement leaves to families. The good news is that the single most useful habit is also the simplest: regular movement.

According to the World Health Organization, children and teenagers aged 5 to 17 should get an average of at least 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity across the week, with muscle and bone strengthening activity on at least three of those days. Sixty minutes sounds like a lot until you break it up. It does not have to happen in one block, and it does not have to look like a workout.

  • Walk or cycle part of the school run instead of driving the whole way
  • Trade fifteen minutes of screen time for a game in the park or garden
  • Let a dental or BMI result be the nudge to swap one sugary drink for water
  • Sign up for a weekend class the whole family can do together
  • Keep the weekend active with swimming, a bike ride, or a family sports session

The aim is not to train a child like an athlete. It is to make activity a normal, enjoyable part of the week, so a good screening result stays good and a borderline one has room to improve.
