Three things reduce what the skin can make. Sunscreen blocks the wavelength that starts the process. Covering clothing does the same. Darker skin needs longer exposure to make the same amount. None of these are reasons to sit in the midday heat. They are reasons food and, when needed, a supplement matter more here than the simple sun advice suggests.

Vitamin D3 and vitamin D2, and how it is absorbed
Supplements and fortified foods use one of two forms. Vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is the form the skin makes. Vitamin D2, or ergocalciferol, comes from plants. A systematic review found D3 raises the blood level more effectively, though both work. Either way, vitamin D is fat soluble, so it is absorbed best with a meal that contains some fat.
Supplements, and when they are actually needed
A supplement is not a daily default. It is for when sun and food cannot keep the level up, and a blood test has shown a gap. Calcium, bone health and what a shortfall does

If any of that is you, the answer is not to guess. The test to ask for is the 25 hydroxy vitamin D test, reported in nanograms per millilitre. Authorities commonly treat below 20 as deficient and 20 to 30 as insufficient. And more is not better, because too much vitamin D over time raises the calcium in your blood.
