Why this is a great time to start

Not long ago this choice was not on the table. Under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia began licensing women-only fitness centres in 2017, physical education for girls entered public schools around the same time, and a dedicated women's department was created under the General Authority for Sports. The national Quality of Life goal is to lift physical-activity participation from 13% to 40%, and Saudi women have been a huge part of that shift, with hundreds of thousands now training regularly. In other words, you are not doing something unusual; you are joining a fast-growing community.

What the floor actually looks like

Because facilities in the Kingdom are separated by gender, a women's gym is a fully female space from the door inwards, which is exactly what makes it comfortable. Expect the same equipment any good gym has: a cardio area with treadmills, bikes and rowers; resistance machines that guide the movement for you; a free-weights section with dumbbells and benches; and open floor for stretching and functional work. If lifting is new to you, our ladies' gym floor is laid out so you can begin on the simple machines and progress at your own pace.

Classes and staff

Most women's gyms run a timetable of group fitness classes, from gentle mobility and yoga to strength and higher-energy cardio, all led by female instructors. Classes are the easiest on-ramp for a first-timer: the coach sets the pace, you follow along, and you are moving with other women at the same level. The staff, from reception to the trainers on the floor, are there to help you find your way around, and there is no such thing as a question that is too basic on day one.

What a good first session looks like

You do not need to earn your place with an exhausting workout. A great first session is short and unintimidating: five minutes walking on the treadmill to warm up, then two or three resistance machines for the major muscle groups, keeping the weight light enough to move smoothly, and a few minutes of stretching to finish. Twenty to thirty minutes is plenty. The goal on day one is not to be sore tomorrow; it is to leave thinking "I can come back." There is no one to compare yourself to either, because every woman around you started on her own first day once. Do that two or three times a week and progress takes care of itself.

Your day-one checklist

Keep it simple. Bring:

  1. Comfortable, modest activewear you can move freely in.
  2. Clean indoor trainers (many gyms ask that outdoor shoes stay off the floor).
  3. A refillable water bottle.
  4. A small towel.
  5. Your ID for the sign-up.
  6. Headphones, if music helps you settle in.

Arrive ten minutes early and ask for a quick tour. You do not need a plan for your whole workout; even twenty minutes of walking on a treadmill and a few machines is a complete first session. If you would like to see the right form before you go, our exercise library shows each movement step by step.

Walk in with confidence

The hardest rep is the first one through the door, and once it is behind you the rest gets easier every visit. A women-only floor, female coaches and a community going through the exact same thing are waiting on the other side. Find your nearest GymNation in Riyadh and make day one the day you begin.
