What garden cress seeds actually are
Garden cress (Lepidium sativum, and habb al rashad in Arabic) is a fast-growing leafy plant whose tiny reddish-brown seeds are the prize. Nutritionally they are dense: reviews put their protein at roughly a fifth to a quarter of their weight, with useful fibre and an oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids. They are best known, though, for one mineral in particular.
Iron, and why it matters here
The reason grandmothers reach for these seeds is iron. Garden cress seeds are genuinely iron-rich, which is why they carry a long reputation for building people back up after illness, childbirth or a stretch of fatigue. Exact figures vary widely between analyses, so it is fairer to call the seeds a notable plant source of iron than to promise a precise number.
There is a little clinical signal behind the tradition too. Small studies in adolescent girls have reported higher haemoglobin after taking garden cress preparations daily over several months. These are early, limited studies rather than proof, but they point the same way the tradition does. The catch is that the iron in seeds is the non-heme kind, which the body absorbs less easily, and that is where preparation comes in.
The postpartum and milk-supply tradition
The most deeply rooted use in the Gulf is after birth. Garden cress is a classic galactagogue, a food traditionally given to support milk supply in nursing mothers, credited to its iron and protein, and reviews note it has long been recommended for exactly that. It is worth being honest about the evidence: much of the lactation support is traditional and animal-study based rather than settled human-trial data. It is a nourishing food for a new mother, not a medicine, and anything to do with feeding a baby is a conversation for her doctor.
How Saudi homes actually use them
The preparation is half the point, because it makes the iron more available and the seeds easier to eat:
- Soaking. The seeds swell and form a soft gel within minutes in water or milk. Soaked seeds are gentler on the stomach and easier to absorb.
- With milk and dates. The classic postpartum drink stirs soaked seeds into warm milk, often with dates, ghee or honey for energy.
- Roasted or in energy balls. Lightly roasting and grinding the seeds cuts their natural bitterness, and across the region they are bound with dates into small energy balls.
Soaking and roasting are not just tradition dressed up. They genuinely reduce the anti-nutrients in the raw seed, such as phytic acid and oxalates, that otherwise block some of the very mineral you are eating them for.
Where it stops being harmless
A traditional food is not the same as a free pass, and this is the part the folklore skips. Two cautions are worth respecting. First, garden cress is goitrogenic in large amounts, meaning very high intakes may interfere with thyroid function, so this is a food to enjoy in normal culinary quantities, not to megadose. Second, the seeds are highly absorbent and traditionally avoided during pregnancy, so anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or managing a thyroid condition should check with a doctor before making them a daily habit. Take them with plenty of water, keep the amounts sensible, and they stay firmly on the helpful side of the line.
Good food, real training
Traditions like habb al rashad earn their place because they nourish, but no seed replaces the work. Iron and protein support the body; strength, movement and consistency build it. If you want that side handled properly, our ladies-only spaces and our personal trainers can turn good eating into real progress, and our exercise library gives you somewhere to start.
