Saudi Arabia's drive to get more people moving just picked up another vote of confidence from the top. Jeddah's governor, Prince Saud bin Abdullah bin Jalawi, has backed amateur sport as a foundation for a healthier, more connected community and a pipeline for future national talent, according to Makkah Newspaper. If you live in Jeddah and have thought about lacing up for a local league, that is your green light — and the health payoff is the real headline.

What Jeddah is backing

The message was about grassroots participation, not elite results. The Jeddah Amateur Football League, chaired by Abuttalib Al-Awaji, was singled out for programs that have widened community involvement in the game, while Abdulaziz bin Muhammad bin Aboud, who heads the Ministry of Sports branch for the Makkah Region, framed the effort as part of a broader plan: develop more amateur competitions, launch quality initiatives for different segments of the community, and make sport a normal part of daily life. Each of those goals ladders up to Saudi Vision 2030 and its Quality of Life Program.

Why amateur sport matters more than the scoreline

The scale of the amateur game in the Kingdom is easy to underestimate. In the 2023-24 season, the Saudi Amateur Football League drew 88,025 players across 620 competitions in 30 leagues, with 10,376 matches played — 87,729 men in 3,050 teams and 296 women in 19 teams, according to Arab News. Those are not professional athletes; they are people who decided to show up, week after week. That habit — regular, social, moderately intense movement — is exactly what the Quality of Life Program is trying to grow, because it does more for public health than any short-lived fitness trend.

How to actually start

Joining a community league is the fun part, but the players who last are usually the ones who build a base first. If you have not trained in a while, a few weeks of general conditioning is the difference between enjoying your first season and picking up a niggle in week two. Group sessions are an easy on-ramp — our group fitness classes cover the cardio and strength work that amateur football quietly demands. If you would rather learn the movements properly before you push the pace, the exercise library walks through the basics, and our fitness calculators give you simple numbers to track as you progress.

Bring the community spirit indoors

Jeddah's point is simple: sport is for everyone, not just the pros — and it is best when it is shared. That is the same idea a good gym floor runs on. If you are ready to build the fitness that makes your amateur season more fun and less painful, find your nearest GymNation in Jeddah and make the first session this week.
