What is happening in Riffa

Bahrain is hosting the Arab U-17 Volleyball Championship at the Isa bin Rashid Volleyball Arena at Isa Sports City in Riffa, with fixtures running from 10 to 16 August 2026. Six national youth teams are competing in a single round-robin: Saudi Arabia, the defending champions, alongside Kuwait, Jordan, Algeria, Egypt and the hosts. The event is organised by the Bahrain Volleyball Association and the Arab Volleyball Association.

There is genuine home hope, too: the young Bahrain side, coached by Yusuf Khalifa, took silver at the inaugural 2024 edition in Amman, and open their campaign against Algeria before facing Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Egypt across the week.

Why volleyball is such good fitness

Volleyball hides a serious workout behind all the fun. A single rally asks you to jump, sprint, dive and react, again and again — which is why players tend to be athletic all over.

  • Explosive power. Every spike and block is a jump. Training that kind of power builds strong, springy legs and a solid core.
  • Agility and reflexes. Chasing the ball sharpens footwork, balance and reaction speed you can use in any sport.
  • Full-body conditioning. Long rallies are interval training in disguise — bursts of effort with short rests, exactly the pattern that builds fitness fast.
  • Teamwork and confidence. It is social, encouraging and a brilliant way for young people to stay active with friends.

How young players can build a foundation

You do not need a national squad to train like an athlete. The jumping, landing and quick changes of direction in volleyball are built on general strength and good movement, so that is the smart place to start. Younger players and students can find their footing with the fundamentals in the exercise library, add some jump and conditioning work through a HIIT workout, and — if you are studying — a student membership makes it easy to stay consistent. Focus on landing softly and moving well before you chase big jumps.
