A Bahraini championship on the world calendar

Strength sport in Bahrain just took a real step up. The third Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Open Bodybuilding Championship, known as the KHK Open, has been accredited by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB), earning a spot on the sport's official global calendar alongside events like the South American Championship and the Diamond Cup Luxembourg. According to Gulf Daily News, it takes place on 19 September 2026 at the University of Bahrain, organised by the Bahrain Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation under the patronage of Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

For a country the size of Bahrain, international recognition like this is a big deal. It puts local athletes on the same stage as competitors from around the world.

A stage for every kind of athlete

One of the best things about the championship is how broad it is. There are seven categories, from two bodybuilding divisions (75kg and over-75kg) to physique and classic physique classes, plus a masters division for athletes aged 40 and over, proof that it is never too late to build a competitive physique. It is open to Bahrainis, residents of other nationalities, and competitors travelling in from outside the kingdom, all judged by an international panel.

How to start building strength yourself

You do not need to be heading for a stage to train like it matters. The fundamentals that build muscle are refreshingly simple, and they work for beginners just as well as champions:

  • Progressive overload: add a little weight, a rep, or a set over time. Muscle grows when you ask a bit more of it each week.
  • Compound movements: squats, presses, rows and hinges train the most muscle at once. Learn the technique first with our exercise library before you chase heavy loads.
  • Enough protein and rest: muscle is built between sessions, not just during them. Sleep and recovery days are part of the programme.
  • Consistency over intensity: three solid sessions a week you actually keep beats a perfect plan you quit.

If you are not sure where to start, this is exactly what a coach is for. One of our personal trainers can set you up with a beginner strength plan, and if you prefer training with others, a group class is an easy way to build the habit.
