Bahrain Surf Park, the Club Hawaii wave-pool destination on the island's southwest coast, has finished filling its lagoon and is on track to open in 2026. According to indexbox.io, the region's first Wavegarden Cove surf pool is now nearly ready, and for anyone in Bahrain who trains, that matters: a brand new active-leisure venue with a beginner surf academy is arriving close to home, and surfing itself is one of the most complete full-body workouts you can do.

What is Bahrain Surf Park Club Hawaii?
The park sits inside Bilaj Al Jazayer, a 1.3 million square metre leisure development on Bahrain's sunset coast, and it is a joint project between Edamah, the Bahrain real estate investment company, and GFH Financial Group. Travel and Tour World reports it is the first surf park in the MENA region to use Spain's Wavegarden Cove technology, which is known for its low energy use. Across the 52,000 square metre destination there is also dining, retail, cabanas and event space, so it is built as a full day out as much as a place to train.
The numbers are what make it usable for real practice. The pool produces about 1,000 waves per hour and can take up to 90 surfers at a time, from first-timers to experienced riders. General Manager Victoria Williams said the lagoon milestone signifies years of planning, design and construction, and that the aim is to make surfing accessible to everyone.
Club Hawaii Surf Academy: coaching for all levels
You do not need to have surfed before to use it. The Club Hawaii Surf Academy is built around structured coaching for every level, from complete beginners through to advanced surfers, and Travel and Tour World reports the academy will run over 140,000 surf sessions a year. A controlled wave pool is a far gentler place to learn than the open sea: the waves are consistent, the conditions are predictable, and a coach can put you on the right wave for your ability instead of leaving you to read the ocean. For a first-timer, that turns surfing from an intimidating idea into a session you can actually book.
What wave-pool surfing does for your fitness
Surfing looks like balance and skill, but underneath it is genuine conditioning. The Wave, an inland Wavegarden surf lake in the UK, breaks down what a session actually trains, and the short version is that it works almost everything. Paddling drives your heart rate up and, repeated across a session, builds real cardiovascular fitness, while popping to your feet and holding the ride demands constant core control.
The main muscles a surf session works include:
- Shoulders, back and arms (deltoids, latissimus dorsi, trapezius, biceps and triceps) for paddling
- The core (rectus abdominis and obliques) for balance and the pop-up
- Legs, hips and trunk for the twisting pop-up movement and its range of motion
The balance side is not just a feeling. Research from Southern Cross University in Australia found that long-term recreational surfing appeared to maintain or improve balance, coordination and control. And because it is classed as vigorous exercise, a surf session burns roughly the same calories as football, rock climbing or a session in the gym, so it counts as real training and not only a day out.
How to get surf-ready at GymNation
You do not have to wait for opening day to start preparing, and dryland work is exactly how surfers build the strength and stamina a session demands. A few weeks of focused conditioning will make your first waves safer and far more fun:
- Build paddling power with rows, lat pulldowns and shoulder work so you can catch waves without gassing out
- Train your core with planks, dead bugs and anti-rotation holds for a steadier pop-up
- Work single-leg balance and hip and ankle mobility for a stable stance on the board
- Add short cardio intervals so your heart rate settles quickly between waves
Ready to get started? Fill in the enquiry form and the GymNation team will help you build the strength, balance and engine that make your first surf session a good one.
