The ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon returns for its 8th edition on 12 December 2026, and this year the start line moves right onto the Abu Dhabi Corniche. Whether you want to take on the full 42.195 km, share it in a two-person relay, or jog a family 2.5 km with the kids, this is the race the whole capital builds towards. If you have been thinking about pinning on a number for the first time, the weeks between now and December are exactly when a steady, sensible plan pays off.

What is new for the 8th edition

The headline change is where it all begins. According to Al Khaleej, the race starts on the Abu Dhabi Corniche, with the marathon village open from 7 to 12 December at the ADNOC headquarters park overlooking the water. Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said the marathon has become one of the region's leading annual sporting events, and the Corniche setting hands runners a flat, scenic route with the sea on one side for most of the way.

How big the Abu Dhabi Marathon has become

The event has grown fast. According to Abu Dhabi Media Office, participation climbed from around 10,000 runners in 2018 to more than 37,000 across over 150 nationalities in the 2025 edition. That scale means plenty of pacers, water stations and fellow first-timers around you on the day, so nobody has to run alone. If you would rather get expert eyes on your form, our personal trainers can tailor a running build-up to your level.

Race categories at the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon 2026

There is a distance for every level this year, so the hardest decision is which one to commit to:

  • Full marathon, 42.195 km, for experienced distance runners chasing a personal best.
  • Two-person relay, which lets you split the full marathon with a friend.
  • 10 km, a strong goal for a confident beginner who has a few months to train.
  • 5 km, an ideal first event that is still long enough to feel like a real achievement.
  • 2.5 km family and children's run, so the whole household can take part together.

Two warm-up races before the main day

The organisers have built in two preparatory races, and they are the best rehearsal you will get. According to Abu Dhabi Media Office, Al Dhannah hosts a 10 km on 24 October 2026, and the Al Ain Region hosts a half marathon of 21.1 km on 7 November 2026. Treat either one as a dress rehearsal, a chance to test your pacing, your kit and your fuelling on a real course well before December arrives.

A simple prep plan for the flat Corniche course

A flat course like the Corniche rewards even, patient pacing far more than it rewards early speed. If you are starting close to scratch, build up gradually across the weeks you have left rather than cramming everything into the final fortnight:

  1. Walk or jog three times a week, keeping each session easy enough that you could still hold a conversation.
  2. Add a little distance to one run each week instead of chasing a faster time.
  3. Do most of your running on flat ground so your legs learn the steady rhythm the Corniche will ask for.
  4. Rest at least one full day between your harder sessions so your body actually adapts to the work.
  5. Run your chosen warm-up race, then ease right off in the final week before 12 December.

Pick a distance that feels like a stretch rather than a leap. A nervous first-timer is almost always better served by a confident 5 km than a shaky 10 km, and there is no shame in stepping up to the longer race next year once this one is behind you. Mixing in a weekly group fitness class keeps your cross-training varied while your legs recover between runs.

How to register for the Abu Dhabi Marathon

Registration for the 8th edition is open through the official marathon website, where you choose your distance and then collect your race pack at the village before the day. Signing up early is worth it, because a fixed date on the calendar is the single best motivator for sticking to your training right through the autumn. And if December's cooler mornings still feel far off, a GymNation in Abu Dhabi gives you a climate-controlled base for your weekly treadmill runs.
