Dubai is about to add one of basketball's fastest formats to a very busy sporting season. The FIBA 3x3 World Tour arrives in the city on 7-8 November 2026, bringing the world's leading three-a-side teams to town as the opening chapter of a new hosting deal that runs through 2028. If you have ever watched 3x3 and thought the players moved like sprinters who happen to shoot hoops, you were reading it right, and the athleticism behind that speed is something any gym-goer can start building today.

What is coming to Dubai

The stop is a Masters round of the global FIBA 3x3 series, staged with Dubai Sports Council and tied to the emirate's Dubai Sports Plan 2033. The three-year agreement will keep the Masters in Dubai through 2028, and this first edition lands in November with ranking points and prize money on the line. Organisers say the line-up brings together Olympians alongside world and European champions among the top-ranked teams on the circuit, so the standard should be very high.

The timing matters. Dubai hosts near the business end of the season, just before the World Tour Final in Rio de Janeiro on 12-13 December 2026. The 2026 campaign opened back in April in Japan and has since travelled across four continents, so the teams reaching Dubai will be sharp and chasing points. "We are delighted to welcome Dubai to the FIBA 3x3 World Tour this season," said Alex Sanchez of FIBA 3x3, praising the city's sports infrastructure and its record with major events. Issa Sharif of Dubai Sports Council framed the hosting as part of the wider Dubai Sports Plan 2033.

Why 3x3 is such a demanding game

3x3 is basketball stripped back to its most intense form. Teams play half court on a single hoop, a game lasts ten minutes or ends the moment a team reaches 21 points, and a short shot clock keeps the ball moving almost constantly. There is nowhere to hide and very little standing around. Every possession asks for a hard sprint, a jump and a change of direction, then another one seconds later. That mix of repeated high-intensity efforts with short recovery is what makes the format such a test of conditioning, and it is exactly what you can borrow for your own training.

How to train for fast, explosive 3x3 basketball

You do not need a court to build a 3x3 engine. A few focused sessions a week on the gym floor will carry over to any fast-paced sport, and to everyday life too. If you are not sure where to start, our exercise library and our personal training team can help you put a plan together.

  1. Explosive lower-body power. Box jumps, broad jumps and squat jumps teach your legs to produce force quickly, which is what a first step and a rebound both come down to. Keep the reps low and the quality high.
  2. Repeat-sprint conditioning. Short, hard efforts with short rest mirror the stop-start rhythm of a 3x3 game far better than a long steady jog. Interval work is the fastest way to build that, and a HIIT session is a simple place to begin.
  3. Change of direction and agility. Ladder drills, cone shuffles and quick pivots train the braking and re-accelerating that fill every possession.
  4. Core and landing strength. A strong midsection and controlled landings protect your knees and ankles when you jump and cut, so add planks, loaded carries and single-leg work.

Two or three of these efforts a week, with real rest between them, is plenty for most people. Progress the difficulty slowly, warm up properly, and stop if something hurts. None of it is reserved for athletes, and all of it makes ordinary movement feel easier.

Catch it live in Dubai

For fans, the November dates are a rare chance to see this format up close, with some of the world's best players trading baskets at a pace television barely captures. Whether you play, coach or simply love the game, it is a fine excuse to get moving yourself.
