The rule that surprises newcomers: think before you film

The gym selfie is a global habit, but in the UAE it comes with a real legal edge. Filming or photographing other people without their consent is against the law here — in a public place as much as a private one — and that includes the gym floor behind you. Dubai Police have publicly warned that taking pictures of people, especially women, without permission is not allowed, and that posting such images online is itself a privacy violation. Penalties reported for the offence are serious: at least six months in jail and/or a fine of between Dh150,000 and Dh500,000, depending on how the image is used.

The practical version is simple. Frame your shot so no one else is in it, or ask the people around you first — the official advice really is “if in doubt, ask.” It keeps you on the right side of both the etiquette and the law.

Mixed and ladies-only floors

Ladies-only gyms, women-only sections and women-only branches are common across the UAE and still growing, sitting alongside mixed facilities. Many members choose a ladies-only floor for comfort, and the etiquette follows the layout: the women-only area is exactly that, so respect the boundary, use the entrance that serves it, and don't wander in from the mixed floor to grab a piece of kit. On the mixed floor the personal-space rules matter a little more than they might elsewhere — give people room and keep your eyes on your own set.

Prayer times and Ramadan hours

Two rhythms shape a UAE gym that a visitor might not expect. The first is prayer: a member may step away mid-session to pray, so if a machine is briefly draped with a towel or a water bottle it may not be abandoned — a quick, friendly check beats claiming it outright. The second is Ramadan. Across the Emirates opening hours shift during the holy month — in 2026 the private-sector working day is cut by two hours, with schools, malls and venues on shorter schedules — and gyms move with it, so the timetable and the busiest windows change. Many people train after iftar or before dawn, so check your club's Ramadan hours rather than assuming the usual ones, and be mindful that people around you may be fasting.

The universal rules still count

The local layer sits on top of the basics, it doesn't replace them. The quick version:

DoDon't
Wipe down equipment after every useLeave plates loaded or weights on the floor
Offer to “work in” and alternate sets when it's busySit on a machine scrolling your phone between sets
Keep music in your headphones and calls shortBlock the mirrors others use to check their form

When you're not sure, just ask

Nobody expects a newcomer to know every machine or every local norm on day one. If you're unsure how a piece of kit works, or whether a spot is free, ask a member or one of the gym's trainers — it is far more welcome than guessing. A quick group class is another gentle way in, because the instructor sets both the pace and the etiquette for you. The same courtesy holds at gyms across Dubai: a friendly floor is a shared effort.
