Abu Dhabi's fitness scene just got bigger. A new club has opened in the capital at Reem Mall on Reem Island, a 50,000 square foot flagship that is the latest sign of how quickly the choice of gyms in Abu Dhabi is growing. For anyone who trains here, a new opening on this scale is worth a closer look, not because of any single brand, but because of what a run of large, well equipped clubs does to the standard every gym in the city is measured against.

What opened at Reem Mall

The new club is operated by Wellfit. According to the opening announcement carried by zawya.com, the Reem Mall club spans about 50,000 square feet, a space the company compares to roughly the size of a football field, and it is the brand's sixth location in the UAE. The other five sit in Dubai and Sharjah, so this is the first time the group has placed a flagship in Abu Dhabi itself.

The fitness-industry title healthclubmanagement.co.uk reports that the flagship carries more than 120 cardio and strength machines, built around a HYROX-affiliated training area with certified coaches and dedicated programmes. The kit list is long, and the headline pieces are easy to summarise:

  • A main group exercise studio and a cycling studio fitted with 22 bikes
  • A dedicated martial arts area and a children's studio with an interactive wall
  • A recovery zone with Hyperice equipment, cold plunges, saunas and experiential showers
  • An in-club restaurant and in-body assessment technology

None of that is unusual on its own. What is new is seeing it all under one roof in Abu Dhabi, at a size the capital has not had much of until recently.

What a new flagship signals for Abu Dhabi

Openings like this do not happen in a quiet market. They happen when operators believe enough people will walk through the door to fill a very large floor. Wellfit describes itself as part of Formative, which it calls the UAE's largest fitness collective, launched by the developer Arada in late 2025. Formative says it is targeting 100,000 members across 40 locations by 2027, and reported around 20,000 members across the UAE at the time of the announcement. Those are the company's own numbers, and an ambition is not the same as a result, but the direction of travel is clear: serious money is betting on more people training, more often, in the capital.

For a gym-goer that is good news whoever you train with. More clubs means shorter drives, more class times, newer equipment and more pressure on every operator, ourselves included, to keep standards high. A growing market rewards the people who actually use it.

What to look for when a new gym opens near you

A big opening is exciting, but square footage is not the same as a good training experience. When any new club lands near you, a few practical checks tell you more than the brochure ever will:

  1. Visit at your real training time. A floor that feels spacious at 11am can be packed at 6pm, and the wait for a squat rack is what you will actually live with.
  2. Count the things you use most. If you lift, look at the number of racks and platforms, not the total machine count. If you take classes, read the timetable, not the studio photos.
  3. Ask about coaching. Certified coaches and a proper onboarding session matter far more to a beginner than any one piece of equipment.
  4. Check recovery and the quiet details. Clean showers, working saunas and room to stretch are the things you notice in week three, not on day one.

Run those checks on any club, in any city, and you will make a better decision than you would on floor space alone.
