How Accurate Are Fitness Trackers? Which Numbers to Trust

Heart rate: the number you can mostly trust

Heart rate is the strongest number on your wrist. In a Stanford Medicine study of seven popular wrist wearables and 60 volunteers, six of the seven measured heart rate within 5 percent of the true value. That is because it is measured semi-directly: a green light on the underside of the watch reads the pulse of blood through your skin, a technique called optical or PPG sensing.

The catch is movement. When your arm is pumping and you are dripping with sweat, that optical signal gets noisy. Research from the American College of Cardiology found wrist monitors were most accurate during easy treadmill walking and least accurate during high-intensity elliptical work, while a chest strap — which reads the heart's electrical activity like an ECG — stayed accurate at every intensity. For steady cardio and everyday tracking, wrist fitness tracker heart rate accuracy is good enough. For the hard intervals where you train by zones with a coach who reads your numbers, a chest strap is worth it.

Steps: reliable, with blind spots

Step counting is the metric wrist wearables do best. The blind spot is your arm: it undercounts when your arm is not swinging — pushing a trolley or a stroller, or gripping the treadmill rails — and can add phantom steps when you gesture with your hands. Read it as a consistent day-to-day trend, not a to-the-digit total. Chasing the same daily target is the point; whether it says 9,800 or 10,200 barely matters. Calories: the number to trust least

Here is where the wheels come off. In that same Stanford study, not one of the seven devices estimated calorie burn well: the most accurate was off by an average of 27 percent, and the worst by 93 percent. The study's co-author said that for everyday use you would want error under 10 percent — none got close. The reason is simple: your watch cannot see calories. It estimates them from your heart rate, your movement and the profile you typed in (age, weight, sex), so a small error in each feeds a big error at the end. Treat the calorie figure as a rough, relative guide — handy for comparing today with yesterday, useless as a licence to eat back an exact number. Sleep stages: good at duration, shaky on the details

Wearable sleep tracking accuracy splits neatly in two. Telling sleep from wake — did you nod off, and roughly how long — is something devices do well; a validation study of 11 consumer sleep trackers found they get that right around 85 to 95 percent of the time. Slicing the night into light, deep and REM is much harder: the same study put stage accuracy at roughly 60 to 85 percent, with a consistent tendency to over-report light sleep and total sleep time. Your watch infers stages from movement and heart-rate patterns, not brain waves, so lean on the total and the consistency, and take the pretty stage chart with a pinch of salt.

Readiness and recovery scores: a trend, not a verdict

Oura's Readiness, Whoop's Recovery and Garmin's Body Battery all try to answer one question: how ready are you today? They are not a new measurement — a readiness score is a blend of the numbers above (resting heart rate, heart-rate variability and last night's sleep), so it inherits the error baked into each. No two brands calculate it the same way, and none is validated against a clinical gold standard. That does not make them useless: read against your own baseline over weeks, a downward trend is a real nudge to back off and an upward one is a green light to push. Just do not compare your 70 to a friend's 85 on a different device.

How to actually use your wearable

  • Trust trends over absolutes. Your numbers are most useful compared with your own history, not read as gospel.
  • Match the tool to the job. Everyday heart rate and steps: your wrist is fine. Zone-based interval training: add a chest strap.
  • Down-weight calories. Use them relatively, never as a precise budget.
  • Sleep for consistency. Chase a regular bed and wake time; ignore the stage-by-stage breakdown.
  • Let readiness nudge, not dictate. It is one input, not a doctor's note.
