What a hybrid race actually is

A hybrid race blends endurance and strength into one continuous event. The best-known format, HYROX, is the same everywhere in the world: eight rounds, and each round is a 1km run followed by one functional station. You run, you work, you run again, eight times over, for a total of 8km of running plus eight stations, roughly 16km of effort from start to finish. There is no time limit, the categories run from first-timer to elite, and the organisers say about 98% of athletes finish. Most people cross the line somewhere around the 90-minute mark.

The eight stations, in order

The order never changes, so you can rehearse it. After each 1km run you hit the next station on this list:

  1. SkiErg — 1,000 m
  2. Sled push — 50 m
  3. Sled pull — 50 m
  4. Burpee broad jumps — 80 m
  5. Rowing — 1,000 m
  6. Farmers carry — 200 m
  7. Sandbag lunges — 100 m
  8. Wall balls — 100 reps

The loads depend on your division and gender. Published race guides put the open-division sleds at the heavy end, roughly 152kg to push and 103kg to pull, with a two-times-24kg farmers carry, a 20kg sandbag and 6kg wall balls. Pro divisions go heavier. Knowing the numbers matters, because the sleds and the wall balls are where most first-timers lose the most time.

How to train for it

Train the runs tired, not fresh

The trap is treating running and strength as two separate hobbies. On race day every run happens on legs that have just finished a station, so your sessions should copy that. Finish a set of lunges or wall balls, then run 400 to 800m straight away. Pace the very first kilometre conservatively, because going out too fast is the single most common beginner mistake, and warm up properly for 10 to 15 minutes before you start.

Build the stations one at a time

You do not need a competition setup to prepare. The engine you build in a HIIT session transfers directly to the SkiErg and the row, and you can rehearse the lunges, wall balls and carries with a single kettlebell or sandbag. Drill the movement patterns in our exercise library until the form holds up when you are out of breath, because good range of motion is what stops fatigue snowballing into the later stations.

Put it together

Six to eight weeks out, string a few stations and runs into one continuous block once a week so your body learns the transitions. If you want a plan built around your current fitness, a personal trainer can map the weeks between now and your race and keep the strength and running progressing together.

UAE races you can actually enter

Hybrid racing is firmly established in the UAE. HYROX came to Abu Dhabi's ADNEC in July 2025, the emirate's second event of the year after Sharjah hosted one that April, and a novelty on-snow edition even ran inside Ski Dubai in 2026. Globally the format is booming, with more than 500,000 athletes racing across 90 events in the 2024/25 season. Dates for the next UAE races move around, so check the official HYROX calendar for the current schedule rather than an old listing, and enter early: popular events fill up and run waiting lists.

Ready to test yourself?

A hybrid race rewards the people who practise it the way it feels on the day, runs and stations back to back, never one without the other. That is exactly how our HYROX classes at GymNation are built, so you can train the format with coaching and the real equipment long before you pin on a race number. Come and try a session, and see how ready you already are.
