Fifteen teams, five fast-and-furious groups and a fortnight of five-a-side: the Elite Presidential Guard Futsal Championship has powered to its finale at Nad Al Sheba Sports Complex in Dubai. It is a great watch — and a reminder that futsal, the small-sided indoor game, might be one of the most fun ways to get genuinely fit.

A five-a-side festival in Dubai

Run by the Presidential Guard in cooperation with the UAE Football Association under the banner "Be with the Elite," the tournament brought 15 teams to Nad Al Sheba from 6 to 9 August 2026, split into five groups of three. The football was relentless: on the second day alone, Al Ittihad reported 51 goals across just 10 matches — the kind of scoreline that tells you everything about the pace of the small-sided game.

The closing day added a nostalgic twist. According to Al Khaleej, the final was paired with an exhibition "good old days" match featuring 42 veteran Emirati stars — a tribute to players who once served the national teams and clubs, back on the court for the love of it.

Why futsal is such a good workout

On a court that size, there is nowhere to hide. Futsal is a rapid loop of sprint, stop, turn and sprint again, with the ball rarely out of play — so your heart rate lives near the top, and your feet and hips are constantly working to change direction. That makes it a brilliant engine builder and an agility session rolled into a game you actually want to play.

You can train the same qualities on the gym floor. The stop-start pattern is a near-perfect match for high-intensity interval training, which sharpens exactly the sprint-recover-sprint engine futsal demands. And because the sport is as social as it is sweaty, the team energy of a group fitness class is the closest thing to it when you are not chasing a ball — same push, same buzz of doing it alongside other people.

Ready to play your own five-a-side?

You do not need a tournament place to get the futsal feeling — just a bit of space, some quick feet, and people to push you. Find your nearest GymNation in Dubai, bring a few friends, and turn that stop-start energy into a session of your own.
