Launched under the Crown Prince of Ras Al Khaimah, Sheikh Mohammed bin Saud Al Qasimi, the challenge is run as a community health initiative rather than a one-off contest. Organisers have been clear that the point is lasting change: as the Crown Prince has put it, true victory begins with overcoming yourself, and everyone who works to improve their health is valued — not only the twenty who take home cash. That framing matters, because it tells you exactly how to approach it: build habits you can keep, not a crash you cannot.
Who can enter the Ras Al Khaimah Fitness Challenge
The eligibility is specific. According to Gulf News, the challenge is open to UAE citizens holding Ras Al Khaimah passports, aged 13 to 30, with a body mass index of at least 40, who are registered members of a gym in Ras Al Khaimah. Registration opens in early September 2026 at gyms across the emirate, so the first practical step is simply to be signed up and training somewhere local before the doors open. If you are not sure where your numbers sit today, our fitness calculators are a quick, private way to check your BMI and set a starting point.
How the prizes work
Twenty participants win cash. First place takes Dh50,000, and the prize steps down by Dh1,000 per position, so twentieth place still earns Dh31,000. In a previous edition, organisers also rewarded people who did not finish in the top twenty with Dh1,000 for every kilogram of weight they lost, and the overall winner that year took the top prize after losing 19kg. It is a structure that rewards effort broadly, not just the single biggest transformation — another sign this is built to pull a whole community into training, not to crown one person.
How to train for a nine-month challenge
This is not a two-week shred. Past editions ran across roughly nine months, and the participants who did best did not chase a quick fix. Interviewed afterwards, they described training four to five days a week and mixing gym sessions with everyday movement like walking and cycling. That combination — real resistance work plus a lot of low-intensity activity — is exactly what makes fat loss stick over a long window. If you have never followed a structured plan, our exercise library is a good place to learn the movements before you load them.
Build a week you can repeat
Aim for a schedule you could still be running in month eight, because that is the one that wins. A simple, honest template looks like two or three full-body strength sessions, two easier cardio or conditioning days, and a daily step target you actually hit. Strength keeps muscle on while you lose fat, and the steps quietly burn the rest. If you are new to lifting, working with a personal trainer for the first few weeks is the fastest way to learn good technique and avoid the injuries that end challenges early.
Get the nutrition basics right
Training gets the headlines, but the participants who kept their results all changed how they ate. The common threads in their own accounts were unglamorous and repeatable: controlling portions, keeping an eye on daily calories, and cutting the easy wins first — fizzy drinks and sweets. You do not need a perfect diet to see change over nine months; you need a good-enough one you can hold. Keep protein high, keep vegetables on the plate, and treat the sugary drinks as the first thing to go, not the last.
One honest caveat: this challenge is aimed at people carrying a lot of extra weight, and a big change in training and diet is worth running past a doctor first — especially if you have any existing health condition. Get the medical green light, start gradually, and let the nine months do the work.
Turn the challenge into a nine-month habit
Whether or not you qualify for the prize money, the real reward here is the routine you build getting ready for it — and since being a gym member is part of entering, there is no better time to lock that in. GymNation has gyms across the UAE with the equipment, classes and coaches to carry you through a challenge like this, so join GymNation and start training today, months before registration opens.
