What the SEHA Family Race is
The race runs on 17 August 2026 at ADNEC, part of Abu Dhabi Summer Sports 2026 — the region's largest indoor sports event, which fills the exhibition halls from 6 June to 23 August with climate-controlled activity for all ages and fitness levels. Held during the Year of the Family, the SEHA event is built on a simple idea: physical activity is preventive health, and the easiest way to make it stick is to do it together. There are four categories, so nobody is left on the sidelines:
| Category | Distance | Ages |
|---|---|---|
| Youth Race | 1 km | 4-17 |
| Family Race | 1 km | 4 and above |
| Intermediate | 3 km | 9 and above |
| Long distance | 5 km | 9 and above |
Entry to Abu Dhabi Summer Sports is open to all ages, and every visitor registers before coming in. Beyond the logistics, though, here is the part the announcement skips: how a family actually gets ready for a 1, 3 or 5km with roughly two weeks on the clock and August outside.
How to train for it in two weeks — without melting
Two weeks is not long enough to transform anyone, and it does not need to be. A 1km is a walk-jog for most people, and a 3-5km is comfortably within reach if you build sensibly and, crucially, train where it is cool. In this heat that means indoors — a treadmill, an air-conditioned gym floor, or a shaded early-morning loop, never the midday pavement.
If you are aiming at the 1km
Three or four easy sessions a week is plenty. Alternate one minute of jogging with one minute of walking for 15-20 minutes, and stretch the jogging intervals a little each time. The goal on the day is to finish smiling, not to set a record.
Stepping up to 3km or 5km
Keep most of your running easy — a pace at which you can still hold a conversation. Add one slightly longer session each week (say 2km, then 3-4km) so the race distance feels familiar before you get to ADNEC. Mix in a couple of short conditioning sessions to build the engine; an indoor HIIT workout a week does more for your finishing kick than another slow lap. Take two easy days before the race and you will arrive fresh.
Getting the kids ready
Children are not small adults, so keep it play, not programme. For the 4-17 groups, the training is really just active time — a game of tag, a scoot round the park, a few short run-and-walk stretches so the distance is not a surprise on the day. Let them set the pace, keep water close, and make the finish line the point rather than the clock. A student membership is an easy way to keep a teenager moving once the novelty of race day wears off, and family group classes turn training into something everyone looks forward to rather than a chore.
Race-day basics in the summer
Even indoors, treat hydration as part of the plan: drink through the days before, not just at the start line. Eat something light an hour or two ahead, warm up with a few minutes of easy movement, and start slower than feels natural — nearly everyone goes out too fast and pays for it in the final stretch. If anyone in the family has a health concern or has been inactive for a long time, a quick word with a doctor before starting is simply sensible, not alarmist. The point of a family race is the shared morning, not the medal.
Make it a family habit, not a one-off
The real win is not 17 August — it is 18 August, and every week after. If the race gives your family a taste for moving together, keep that momentum somewhere cool and welcoming. GymNation is open to all ages and abilities at its gyms in Abu Dhabi and beyond, with no contract options, so there is nothing to lock into while you find your feet. Grab a free day pass and bring the family in to try it — the same effort you put into race day, kept up long after the finish line, is what actually changes how everyone feels.
