The Sharjah Summer Run is back this Sunday, and it is one of the friendliest ways to start running in the emirate. According to Al Khaleej, the Sharjah Sports Council is staging the community race at University City from 6 to 9 in the morning, with a target of 600 runners of every age and both genders taking part. There are four distances to choose from, so whether you have never pinned on a race number or you want a proper 10 km test, there is a start line with your name on it.

What the Sharjah Summer Run involves

The event is built for turnout, not just for fast times. Al Khaleej reports that the Sharjah Sports Council has set four race distances and gives every finisher a commemorative medal, with the top three in each race collecting an award. The distances are:

  • 1 km, aimed at children and complete first-timers
  • 2.5 km, a short and very achievable step up
  • 5 km, the classic beginner goal and a real sense of an event
  • 10 km, for runners who already train regularly

Everything runs inside a three-hour window from 6 to 9 am, and that early start is deliberate, because a dawn slot is the easiest way to dodge the worst of a Sharjah summer morning. The run also belongs to the council's wider series of community sports events, the same programme that drew 500 runners to the Sharjah Charity Run earlier in 2026.

Which distance should you pick?

Pick the distance that matches the training you are actually doing now, not the one you wish you were doing. If you are new to running, the 1 km or 2.5 km lets you finish strong and enjoy the morning rather than survive it. If you already walk or jog most weeks, the 5 km is the sweet spot, long enough to feel like an achievement and short enough to prepare for in a few weeks. The 10 km is a genuine endurance test and suits runners with a regular base behind them. There is no wrong choice here, only the honest one.

How to prepare for the run in the weeks before

You do not need a complicated plan to enjoy a community 5 km. You need consistency and a little structure, and a personal trainer can build that around your week:

  1. Run or walk-run three times a week, keeping most of it easy enough to hold a conversation.
  2. Make one of those runs slightly longer each week, so race day is never the furthest you have gone.
  3. Practise the walk-run method, jogging a few minutes then walking one, which is how most beginners cover 5 km comfortably.
  4. Do a dress rehearsal a week out, in the kit and shoes you will wear, at roughly the same early hour.

Running safely in the Sharjah summer heat

The heat is the part beginners underestimate, so treat hydration and pacing as part of the plan rather than an afterthought.

  • Drink about 10 to 15 oz of water 10 to 15 minutes before you set off, then take water every 20 to 30 minutes on the move. The Road Runners Club of America notes that a runner can lose 6 to 12 oz of fluid every 20 minutes in the heat.
  • Wear light, light-coloured, breathable clothing and leave the long sleeves at home.
  • Ease off your pace, because Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi advises easing intensity in summer rather than chasing a personal best.
  • Know the warning signs, and stop to cool down if you feel dizzy, get a headache, cramp, feel nauseated or suddenly stop sweating.

Make one race the beginning of something bigger

A community run is a brilliant first goal, but the real reward is the training habit you build to get there. A GymNation membership welcomes everyone, from a nervous first session to the confidence of a race morning, and our gyms and group fitness classes are set up for exactly that kind of steady, everyday progress.
