One of the biggest events in student strength sport is coming to the UAE. The University of Sharjah will host the 2026 FISU World University Powerlifting Championship this November, bringing the world university powerlifting championships to readers' doorstep. It is a rare chance to watch elite lifters up close, and a good moment to understand a sport that sits at the heart of almost everyone's strength training. Here is what is happening in Sharjah, what powerlifting actually is, and how you can borrow its best ideas in your own gym sessions.

A World Championship Lands at the University of Sharjah

The championship runs from 26 to 30 November 2026 at the University of Sharjah, with the FISU calendar listing the competition days as 27 to 29 November. According to Sharjah24, the championship brings together 165 athletes and officials from more than 18 countries, spread across several continents. Al Khaleej reports the championship is organised with the UAE Ministry of Sports, FISU and several UAE sporting bodies, including the Sharjah Sports Council. The university has a track record in the sport, having promoted it across the country's campuses and organised the inaugural Asian University Powerlifting Cup, so hosting the world event is a natural next step. The hosting has been backed by University of Sharjah Director Dr. Essam Al-Din Ajmi and by Sharjah VP and University President Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Ahmad Al-Qasimi, who see it as a boost for university sport in the country.

What Is Powerlifting?

Powerlifting is not the same as the weightlifting you see at the Olympics. As FISU describes it, powerlifting is a one-rep-max sport built on three lifts: the squat, the bench press and the deadlift. Athletes compete in men's and women's weight categories, and the winner is the lifter who totals the most weight across the three movements with good technique. In competition each lifter gets three attempts at each lift, and only the best successful attempt counts, so the sport rewards nerve and precision as much as raw power. It rewards patient training, strong fundamentals and real respect for form, which is exactly why its core ideas carry over so well to everyday training.

Why the Big Lifts Belong in Your Training

You do not need to compete to benefit from the lifts a powerlifter builds a career on. The squat, the bench press and the deadlift, along with their simpler variations, are compound movements that train many muscles at once. They are the same movements, scaled to your own level, that a champion relies on, which is part of what makes watching a championship so useful for a beginner. Working them regularly can help you:

  • Build full-body strength that makes everyday tasks like lifting and carrying feel easier.
  • Support bone and joint health through controlled, progressive loading.
  • Improve posture and core stability by bracing under a load.
  • Get more from your gym time, since one big lift does the work of several machines.

How to Start Lifting Safely

If watching the championship makes you want to pick up a barbell, start sensibly rather than chasing a heavy single. A simple path for a beginner looks like this:

  1. Learn the movement first with light weight, or ask a coach to check your technique.
  2. Add weight gradually, a little at a time, once the movement feels solid.
  3. Keep most sets a few reps away from failure, so form stays sharp.
  4. Give each muscle group a couple of days to recover before training it hard again.

Done this way, the big lifts are among the safest and most effective tools in the gym, whatever your age or starting point.
