What happened at DXB
Dubai Mallathon is a citywide summer initiative, launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, that turns big air-conditioned spaces into walking and jogging circuits so people can stay active through the hottest months. On 7 August 2026 it came to an airport for the first time: Dubai Airports hosted it at Terminal 3 Departures, where employees, members of the wider oneDXB community and People of Determination joined two morning indoor walks.
It is not a one-off. According to Dubai's Media Office, sessions run every Friday throughout August at Terminal 3, with the final walk on 28 August marking Emirati Women's Day. Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, called it "a community-driven movement that fits around shifts, work locations, and daily routines and where small steps make a big impact," while Mallathon's general coordinator, Demaithan Al Qamzi, said the airport edition shows the initiative moving into people's workplaces.
The scale of the wider programme is worth noting: the organisers say the 2025 edition drew more than 40,000 participants who logged over 120 million steps, enough to earn a Guinness World Records title for the most runners in a mall run event.
Why walking counts more than people think
It is easy to dismiss walking as the soft option. It isn't. Steps are the most accessible form of training there is — no kit, no experience, no membership required to start — and they add up. A daily walk supports your heart, your mood and your energy, and it is the one habit almost anyone can keep on the busiest, hottest day. Mallathon's real trick is removing the two biggest excuses, the weather and "I don't have time": you walk where you already are.
If you like numbers to keep you honest, our fitness calculators help you set a realistic step or activity target and track it as it grows — the same "small steps, big impact" idea Al Joker described, made personal.
Beat the heat, keep moving
The real lesson of an indoor Mallathon is that summer is no reason to stop. When it is 45°C outside, the answer is to move your movement indoors, not to skip it. An air-conditioned GymNation in Dubai is open around the clock for exactly that — a cool place to walk the treadmill, lift, or just keep the routine alive until autumn. And if you want company on the hard days, a group class turns a solo session into something you actually look forward to.
Turn steps into a habit
You don't need a record attempt to get the benefit — you need a first session. Whether it is a lap of the mall, a Friday walk at DXB or a treadmill at midnight, the win is showing up. Want to test the idea before you commit? Try GymNation with a free day pass and see how easily a daily walk fits into your summer.
