What Emirati Women's Day 2026 marks

Emirati Women's Day falls on 28 August each year, the date the UAE's General Women's Union was founded in 1975. The day itself was established in 2015 by H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation. For 2026 it has grown into a month-long programme of events running all the way to 28 September, a sign of how central women's achievement has become to national life. Sport is one of the clearest places to see that progress, so it is where we will spend the rest of this article.

Emirati women at the Olympics

According to a Women's Day feature by pressbee.net, 11 Emirati women have competed across four Summer Olympic Games, from Beijing 2008 to Paris 2024. That participation is young: Emirati women first appeared at the Games in 2008, a full 24 years after the UAE first competed at a Summer Olympics.

The milestones tell the story better than the totals. At Beijing 2008, taekwondo competitor Sheikha Maitha bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum carried the UAE flag at the opening ceremony. In London 2012, Khadija Mohammed became the first female weightlifter from the UAE to reach the Olympics. Then at Rio 2016, an 18-year-old swimmer named Nada Al Bedwawi became the country's first female Olympic swimmer and was chosen to carry the flag at the opening ceremony, the second Emirati woman to hold that honour. Each of them opened a door that was not open before.

A growing medal record at the Asian Games

The Asian Games have been even more productive. The same feature reports that 10 Emirati women have won 12 medals between 2006 and 2022, three of them gold, across four very different sports: taekwondo, jiu-jitsu, athletics and equestrian. A few names stand out. Aliah Saeed won 10,000m gold at Incheon 2014. Mahra Al Henaei took jiu-jitsu silver at Jakarta 2018. At Hangzhou 2022, Asma Al Hosani and Shamma Al Kalbani both struck gold on the jiu-jitsu mats, a sport that thousands of women and girls across the UAE now train every week.

What connects the list is range. This is not one breakthrough athlete in one sport. It is combat sports, endurance running and equestrian all at once, which means there is almost certainly a discipline here that would suit you too.

Want to start one of these sports?

The best way to honour a legacy like this is to add to it, and you do not need a national-team place to begin. Here is where each of these sports meets everyday training.

Combat sports: taekwondo and jiu-jitsu

Both reward technique over size, which is exactly why they suit beginners. If you want the striking side, a boxing class builds the footwork, timing and core control that carry straight into any martial art. Our ladies-only training spaces give you a comfortable place to learn the basics before you ever spar.

Athletics: running and throwing

You do not need a track to start running well. A steady base of easy miles plus one weekly session of faster work is how most distance runners are built, and our personal trainers can map that progression around your current fitness so you improve without picking up niggles.

Equestrian and everything else: build the engine

Every sport on this list rests on the same foundation: mobility, core strength and aerobic fitness. If you are not sure where to begin, our exercise library breaks the key movements down step by step, so you can learn the form first and add intensity later.

Make this your starting line
