Walking into a gym for the first time can feel like stepping onto a stage, and for a lot of people the fear of judgement at the gym is enough to keep them at home. GymNation has built a whole campaign around that feeling. Its new class, Dans le Noir, runs for 45 minutes in complete darkness, so that nobody can see you and nobody can judge you. According to GymNation's 2026 Fitness Report, 47% of people name fear of judgement as the number-one reason they do not join or return to a gym, and the class was designed to lift that barrier for one session and show that the gym floor is friendlier than it looks.

What GymNation's Dans le Noir class involves

Dans le Noir, which means "in the black", is GymNation's first campaign to run across all of its markets in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain at once. The 45-minute session takes place in a room with no lights, no mirrors and no phones. Instead of watching yourself, you follow the instructor's voice and a soundtrack through wireless headphones, while the instructor wears night-vision goggles to move around the room and keep everyone safe.

Before the lights go out, the group is guided through balance, joint-mobilisation and proprioceptive drills, the kind of movements that teach your body to stay steady without looking. From there the class moves through functional work and strength sets using weighted vests, wrist weights and dumbbells. Take away the mirror and the crowd, and what is left is simply you and the movement.

GymNation chief marketing officer Rory McEntee summed up the idea in one line: "If nobody can see you, nobody can judge you." It is a blunt way to describe a real problem, and the darkness is meant as a first step rather than a permanent hiding place.

Why the gym feels so intimidating

Gym anxiety, sometimes called gymtimidation, is common when people first start training, and it is not a sign of weakness. According to Dr Craig Cypher, a sport psychologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center, it usually comes from fear of judgement about fitness or appearance, intimidation from unfamiliar machines, and the stereotype that gyms are only for people who are already fit. Put those together and the whole room can feel like it is watching, even when nobody is.

The truth is far less dramatic. Most people at the gym are focused on their own workout, counting their own sets and thinking about their own next exercise. Learning to trust that is one of the biggest steps a beginner can take.

How to beat fear of judgement on your first gym visit

You do not need a class in the dark to get past the nerves. A few simple habits, backed by the same sport-psychology advice, make the first visit far easier:

  • Plan your session before you arrive. Knowing your three or four exercises removes the guesswork and the standing around that feeds the nerves.
  • Choose off-peak hours. A mid-morning or early-afternoon visit means fewer people and more space to learn the machines.
  • Put your headphones in. Music helps you zone in on your own workout and tune out the room, which is exactly what the dark class does with sound.
  • Book a class or a trainer. A group session or a coach gives you a plan to follow and a friendly face who expects beginners.
  • Track what you do. Writing down your sets turns a vague worry into clear progress you can see week to week.

None of these needs special equipment or a fitness background. They simply shift your attention from how you look to what you are doing.

Making the gym floor feel like yours

Working out in the dark is a memorable way to prove a point, but the real goal is a gym you feel comfortable in with the lights on. That comfort comes from repetition: the second visit is easier than the first, and the tenth is easier again. Pick a corner you like, learn a handful of machines well, and let your routine grow from there.

GymNation runs 50 locations across the Middle East and serves more than 200,000 members, so there is room for every level, from first-timers to regulars. The point of a campaign like Dans le Noir is not the darkness itself, it is the reminder that the gym belongs to everyone who walks in, judged by no one.
