For years a fitness tracker mostly answered one question: how much did you move today? That is changing fast. According to Khaleej Times, device makers now describe a shift from raw tracking to interpretation. HONOR's GCC general manager Debo Zhang says people want to know whether to push harder or focus on recovery, not just see another row of numbers. Executives from Sony and Xiaomi quoted in the same piece point the same way: watches and rings that learn your personal baseline over several weeks, then flag when something looks off.
The makers also talk up near clinical-grade readings for things like blood-oxygen and sleep, plus smart-living extras such as payments and digital ID. Those are the manufacturers' own claims, so treat them as marketing until an independent test backs them up. What matters for your training is simpler and better established: the device is trying to turn a pile of data into one clear signal.
What a readiness or recovery score actually is
Most modern wearables now roll several overnight signals into a single readiness or recovery number. As InspiredBySports breaks it down, the Oura Ring's Readiness score blends night-time heart-rate variability (HRV), sleep length, breathing rate, skin temperature and the day's activity. Whoop's Recovery score leans on night-time HRV, resting heart rate, breathing rate and sleep efficiency. Garmin's Body Battery uses HRV with its own weighting and keeps updating through the day. Different recipes, same idea: are you ready to train hard, or should today be lighter?
Independent testing suggests the underlying heart-rate data is genuinely accurate. One 2025 study reported the Oura Ring matching an ECG almost exactly for HRV, and the Australian Institute of Sport put Whoop's HRV accuracy near 99 per cent. The catch: the raw HRV figure is reliable, but the score built on top of it is an interpretation, not a verdict.
How to use the number without letting it use you
Here is the part most people get wrong. A single day's score means very little, because HRV naturally swings from night to night. The useful signal is the trend across roughly one to four weeks, and most devices need about a 21-day baseline before their scores settle. So do not scrap a planned session because the ring flashed a low number this morning; look at where the line has been heading all week.
- Green, and feeling good? A harder HIIT or conditioning session is fair game.
- Trending down for several days? Pull the intensity back, add sleep, and keep moving gently.
- Score says one thing, your body says another? Trust your body. Wearables give you signals, not commands.
Bring the data into the gym
