What Salma Al Marri achieved

Competing in the qualifying round of the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Salma Al Marri threw the hammer 58.96 metres, beating the previous UAE women's national record of 58.12 metres. She finished 13th out of 22 athletes in qualifying, just one place short of the final, against some of the best young throwers in the world. She competes under the UAE Athletics Union, and it is not her first big moment on the circuit.

Records like this matter beyond the result sheet. They show young women across the UAE that strength sport is theirs to take up, and that the podium is a realistic goal, not a distant one.

The training behind a big throw

A hammer throw looks like one explosive moment, but it is built on months of patient work. Throwers are some of the strongest, most powerful athletes in any sport, and the way they train has real lessons for anyone who wants to feel stronger.

  • Explosive power. A throw is total-body speed and strength released at once. That same quality — moving a load fast — is what makes everyday tasks like lifting and carrying feel easy.
  • Rotational core strength. The power comes from the hips and trunk turning hard. A strong, mobile core protects your back and improves almost every other movement.
  • Full-body foundation. Legs, back, shoulders and grip all contribute. Throwers build a base of general strength first, then add speed.
  • Patience and technique. Progress comes from consistent practice, not from chasing a personal best every session.

How women can build strength safely

You do not need a hammer or a stadium to train for power. Strength training is one of the best things any woman can do for her health, and it will not leave you bulky — it builds bone density, posture and confidence. The smart way in is to learn good technique first. Working through the exercise library teaches the basics, and a few sessions with one of the personal trainers will get your form right before you add load. If you prefer a women-only space to start, that option exists too.
