According to Al Khaleej, the 23-strong UAE squad spans 13 weight categories — seven for the men, from under 56kg up to over 94kg, and six for the women, from under 45kg to over 70kg. They take to the mats in front of a home crowd, with the adults' finals running through 9 August. The Abu Dhabi Media Office confirms the championship has drawn more than 1,500 athletes from around the world, organised by the International Jiu-Jitsu Federation and hosted by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation.

It has already been a strong tournament for the hosts: the country's youth divisions banked 52 medals in the days before the adults stepped up, and the seniors are chasing another world title on home mats. Competitor Asmaa Al Housani has spoken about the responsibility — and the buzz — of performing in front of a home audience.

What jiu-jitsu actually asks of your body

Grappling can look like a chess match, but it is a brutally physical one. A hard roll can leave you as gassed as a sprint session, because it blends several kinds of fitness at once:

  • Grip and forearm endurance: holding a collar or sleeve for minutes on end is its own strength test.
  • Hip mobility: shrimping, guard retention and sweeps all live in supple, strong hips.
  • Repeat-effort conditioning: the scramble-rest-scramble rhythm of a match is exactly what interval training builds.
  • Core and posterior-chain strength: the base for framing, bridging and staying safe under pressure.

Build a grappler's engine — no gi required

You do not need a competition on the calendar to train like this. High-intensity conditioning mirrors the stop-start bursts of a live roll, while working through our exercise library helps you drill the strength and mobility moves with good form. If you want the full contact-sport buzz, our combat-sport classes sharpen the same timing, footwork and engine grapplers rely on.
