According to Al Khaleej, three UAE athletes carry the flag at 'Oregon 2026': Salma Haitham Al Marri in the hammer throw, and Maryam Kareem and Sulaiman Abdulrahman in the 400 metres. It is the country's first-ever qualification for this championship, with the athletes arriving through a build-up of local, Arab and continental competitions plus overseas training camps. The championship itself is held at Hayward Field and runs from 5 to 9 August, drawing, per World Athletics, nearly 1,900 athletes from 147 nations.

Two of the three Emiratis line up in the 400 metres — a race that sits right on the knife-edge between a sprint and an endurance run. That makes it a perfect lens for a question every runner eventually asks: should I train fast, or train long?

Sprinting and distance running are two different engines

Your body has more than one way to make energy, and the distance decides which one leads:

  • Short and explosive (up to ~400m): powered mostly by fast, oxygen-independent systems. Trained with short, hard efforts and full recovery.
  • Long and steady (5km and up): powered by your aerobic system. Trained with easy-to-moderate mileage that builds your engine over time.
  • The messy middle (800m–1500m): a blend of both, which is why it is so brutal — and why runners who want it all train both ends.

What everyday runners can borrow from the track

You do not need to be heading to Oregon to train smarter. If you mostly jog at one steady pace, adding a little structured speed can transform your fitness. Running drills and strides sharpen your form, while a session or two of group conditioning classes builds the power sprinters rely on. If you would like a plan tailored to your goal, a personal trainer can balance your fast days and your long days so you improve without burning out.
