What the UAE pulled off in Abu Dhabi

Competing at Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi, the UAE national team finished the 2026 Jiu-Jitsu World Championship with 65 medals in total: 18 gold, 17 silver and 30 bronze. The event was staged under the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation and the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation, and drew more than 1,500 athletes from around the world.

The medals were spread right across the age groups, a sign of how deep the country's talent pipeline now runs: 12 came in the Under-14 World Cup, 13 each in the Under-16, Under-18 and Under-21 divisions, and 14 in the Adult category. The adult haul alone was six gold, six silver and two bronze. On the final day of the adult men's competition, home golds went to Rashid Al-Shehhi at under 56kg, Mohammed Al-Ketbi at under 62kg and Omar Al-Fadhli at under 69kg.

Why jiu-jitsu is such a complete workout

You do not have to want a medal to benefit from the way these athletes train. A single round of grappling asks your body to do almost everything at once: grip and pull, brace your core, drive with your legs, and keep breathing while someone resists every move. That combination builds strength, mobility and conditioning together, rather than one at a time.

  • Full-body strength. Controlling another person rewards real, usable strength through your back, hips and grip, not just the muscles you can see in the mirror.
  • Core and mobility. Getting off the floor, framing and shifting your hips trains the deep core and the kind of flexible, controlled movement that protects your back in everyday life.
  • Serious conditioning. A few minutes of live rolling is a genuine cardio test. The "engine" it builds is the same one you develop in a good HIIT session.
  • Calm under pressure. Learning to stay relaxed when things get uncomfortable is a mental skill that carries straight into the rest of your week.

How to start if you have never trained

You do not need to be fit before you begin, and you do not need to spar on day one. The smartest first step is building a base of strength and conditioning so your body is ready to learn the technique. Spend a few weeks getting comfortable with fundamental movements in the exercise library, add some steady conditioning, and work on hip and shoulder mobility. Go at your own pace, warm up properly, and treat the first month as skill-building rather than competition.
