An Emirati sprinter just placed 4th in the world
The UAE has a new track star to cheer. Mariam Kareem finished fourth in the world in the women's 400m hurdles final at the World Athletics U20 Championships, held at Hayward Field in Eugene, USA. She crossed the line in 56.27 seconds, a new UAE national under-20 record, coming within a stride of the podium. The medals went to Romania's Alexandra Ștefania Uță (55.33), South Africa's Tumi Ramokgopa (55.88) and Greece's Eleni Iakovaki (55.99).
She earned her lane in the final the hard way. In the semifinals she clocked 56.39 to top every single qualifier and advance fastest of all into the final. The UAE Athletics Union said her run was a source of national pride, not just for reaching a global final and placing fourth, but for the level she held from round to round.
What the 400m hurdles actually trains
The 400m hurdles is one of the most brutal events in athletics because it asks for everything at once. You need flat-out sprint speed, the speed-endurance to hold it for a full lap, the hip mobility to clear ten barriers without breaking stride, the rhythm to hit the same step pattern every time, and the single-leg power to drive off one foot again and again while fatigue climbs. It is, in short, a full-body test of strength, mobility and control.
Here is the good news: those are exactly the qualities that make everyday training better too. Learning to move powerfully off one leg, to stay tall as you tire, and to own your range of motion carries straight over to running, sport and simply feeling athletic. You can build the basics of every one of them in a gym, and our exercise library is a good place to learn the movements before you load them.
How to build that explosive power yourself
You do not need a track or a world final to train like a sprinter. Start with these building blocks:
- Single-leg strength: split squats, step-ups and lunges build the one-leg power hurdling demands and iron out left-right imbalances.
- Hip mobility: a few minutes of dynamic hip work before you train protects your stride and helps you move through a bigger range.
- Short, sharp conditioning: the 400m hurdles is a lung-burner, and interval work is how you build that engine. A structured HIIT workout is the gym version of the same idea.
- Rhythm and coordination: group training that mixes cardio and strength sharpens timing and keeps it fun. A group class is an easy way in.
Kareem's result is also a reminder of how far women's sport in the UAE has come. If a women-focused space helps you feel at home while you build confidence, our ladies gym is there for exactly that. Everyone is welcome, whatever your starting point.
