The UAE finished on top of the jiu-jitsu world

Jiu-jitsu is close to a national sport in the UAE, and the national team just proved why. Competing on home mats at Mubadala Arena in Abu Dhabi, the UAE finished top of the overall adult standings at the 2026 Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, closing out the week with 65 medals: 18 gold, 17 silver and 30 bronze. The championship, organised by the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation, brought more than 1,500 athletes from around the world to the capital. The result was reported as another step in the UAE's run toward a seventh straight world title.

You do not need to be chasing a world medal to get something out of the sport, though. Jiu-jitsu is one of the most complete workouts around, and the qualities it builds are ones anyone can start developing in the gym.

Why jiu-jitsu is such a good workout

Grappling is a full-body effort from the first grip to the final whistle. A single roll trains your whole system at once:

  • Grip and forearm strength from holding, pulling and controlling.
  • Core and hips that do the real work of every bridge, shrimp and sweep.
  • Mobility through your shoulders, spine and hips, so you can move into and out of positions.
  • Conditioning that spikes your heart rate in short, intense bursts, much like a combat round.

Those are exactly the things you can build before you ever tie on a belt. Learning the foundational movements first, with help from our exercise library, means you step onto the mats already strong and mobile.

How to build a grappler's base

Start simple and stay consistent. A few sessions a week covering these bases will have you ready for your first class:

  • Pulls and carries for grip: rows, farmer's carries and hangs.
  • Core control: planks, dead bugs and hip bridges beat endless sit-ups.
  • Hip and shoulder mobility so positions feel easy, not forced.
  • Short, sharp conditioning: the same fight-round intensity you get in a boxing class, which builds the exact engine grappling asks for.

If you would rather build the habit alongside other people, a group class is an easy, welcoming way to start, whatever your level.
