Emirati women just stood on the podium at the biggest jiu-jitsu event on the planet. At the 2026 Jiu-Jitsu World Championship — running at Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Arena from 1 to 9 August with more than 1,500 athletes — the UAE women's team collected five medals in their competition, reported by Al Khaleej as three gold and two silver. It is a proud sports story, and it is also a quiet lesson for anyone who trains: the results you see on a world stage are built on the same fundamentals available to you on any gym floor.
What happened in Abu Dhabi
The championship brought together over 1,500 competitors from around the world across under-16, under-18, under-21 and adult divisions, organised by the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation and hosted by the UAE Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Federation. On 6 August, the UAE's women delivered — Asma Al Housani, who had earlier spoken at the championship's opening ceremony, was among the gold medallists. According to Al Khaleej, the team's haul of three golds and two silvers came from a group that included Bilqis Al Hashimi and Shama Al Kilbani on the top step, with Maryam Al Ali and Al Anoud Al Harbi taking silver.
Why jiu-jitsu is such good training
Jiu-jitsu rewards exactly the qualities that make anyone fitter and more capable: control under pressure, problem-solving, mobility, and a strong core and grip. It is often called “physical chess” because technique beats brute force — which is also why it is one of the most welcoming martial arts for beginners and for women. You are not trying to be the biggest person in the room; you are learning leverage, timing and composure. Those carry straight over into everyday strength and confidence.
You do not need a medal to start
The athletes in Abu Dhabi are the elite tip of a very broad base. Everything they do rests on fundamentals you can begin this week: a coach who teaches good technique, regular practice, and a supportive room. If a combat sport appeals, a boxing class is a great on-ramp to the footwork, conditioning and confidence that fight sports build. Prefer to start with strength and skill? Working with a personal trainer or joining ladies-only training gives you structure and a community that makes showing up easy.
Train with the same discipline
You will not win a world title this month, and that is not the point. What the UAE's champions model is repeatable: show up, train with intention, and let the discipline shape everything else. If their story has you wanting to move, join GymNation today and find your own room to build strength, skill and confidence.
