For 19 years, the CrossFit Games have sought to answer a definitive question: “Who is the Fittest on Earth?”

This year, General Manager of Sport Dave Castro meticulously programmed and tested 10 events designed to challenge athletes across every aspect of fitness, staying true to the fundamental CrossFit methodology.

The Three Standards of CrossFit Fitness

CrossFit’s foundational approach to fitness, outlined in the 2002 article “What Is Fitness?”, employs three standards for defining and assessing fitness. These formed the backbone of the 2025 Games.

  1. General Physical Skills

Each event tested athletes’ proficiency in ten foundational skills like strength, stamina, and flexibility, putting their training to the ultimate evaluation.

  1. Task Performance and Unknown Challenges

Events included both planned workouts revealed weeks prior and surprise challenges released moments before competition.

Highlights like the pegboard from 2015 and the double-under crossover from 2022 exemplified CrossFit's demand for athletes prepared for the unknown.

  1. Energy System Outputs

Events varied in time, intensity, and modality, testing explosive power, endurance, and skill under load. Short sprints, high-weight challenges, and grueling endurance tasks ensured a well-rounded test of fitness.

By the end of three intense days, the athlete who performed consistently across all these categories would earn the title of Fittest on Earth. “I test the absolute limits of what these athletes, as a collection of people, are capable of,” said Castro.

Event Breakdown

Here’s a look at the challenges that defined the 2025 CrossFit Games:

  • Individual Event 1: Run/Row/Run

A pure endurance test requiring athletes to complete a 4-mile run, 3,000-meter row, and a 2-mile run. Times ranged from 45 to 55 minutes.

  • Individual Event 2: All Crossed Up

A blend of advanced gymnastic moves and heavy weights, this event included wall walks, double-under crossovers, and shoulder-to-overheads with a 70-lb dumbbell for women and a 100-lb dumbbell for men.

  • Individual Event 3: Climbing Couplet

This event mixed pegboard ascents with increasingly heavy squat cleans, testing grip strength, coordination, and agility.

  • Individual Event 4: Albany Grip Trip

A late twist saw the run increased to 400 meters and the final handstand walk extended to the longest distance in CrossFit Games history—150 feet.

  • Individual Event 5: 1RM Back Squat

Athletes competed to find their one-rep max in the ultimate test of raw strength.

  • Individual Events 6 & 7: Throttle Up & Hammer Down

Sprint-style challenges pushed athletes’ speed and endurance, with weight vests adding intensity to box jump-overs and chest-to-bar pull-ups.

  • Individual Event 8: Going Dark

Combining high-calorie biking, deficit handstand push-ups, and yoke carries, this challenging event tested both strength and endurance.

  • Individual Event 9: Running Isabel

A high-intensity pairing of AirRunner sprints and lightweight snatches kept competitors under 5-minute finishes.

  • Individual Event 10: Atlas

Released just hours before the event, this surprise finale featured thrusters, rope climbs, and a demanding overhead walking lunge, providing a spectacular close to the Games.
