Are you keeping up with your fitness New Year’s resolutions now that 2025 is twelve days in?

Rex Carpenter, a physiologist at Kettering Health, explains that the primary challenge for many people is setting goals that are too ambitious.

“It’s that time of year when people aim to get stronger and establish certain goals. Often, they approach this with the best intentions,” Carpenter noted.

To set effective fitness goals, Carpenter emphasizes the importance of being specific.

Instead of just saying, “I want to lose weight,” define exactly how much weight you want to lose and within what time frame.

“For instance, it could be, ‘I want to be more active for my grandkids,’ or, ‘I want to train for and run a half marathon,’” Carpenter said.

After defining your goal, the next step is identifying your motivation.

Then, determine the resources or tools you’ll need to achieve it. This might include purchasing exercise equipment, getting a gym membership, or joining a supportive community.

“Having a support system is crucial,” Carpenter said. “It’s important to surround yourself with people who encourage you while also holding you accountable.”

One of the most common excuses Carpenter hears from patients is a lack of time. For those who feel too busy, he suggests reviewing their daily schedule and even their screen time.

“People often say they don’t have an hour a day, so I ask them to look at their phone usage and see how much time they spent on it yesterday,” he shared.

Carpenter advises against going all-in when starting a new fitness goal. Instead, begin with small, manageable steps and build from there.

“Start with small, achievable tasks that boost your confidence. Make sure you’ve solidly established those habits before moving on to the next challenge,” Carpenter said.
