The beginning of a new year always brings opportunities for setting fresh goals, particularly in fitness.
Over the past year, trends like home gyms, functional fitness, the 12-3-30 treadmill workout, and ice baths gained widespread popularity across platforms like TikTok and Instagram.
Looking ahead to 2025, which fitness trends will dominate the scene? Here’s a closer look:
Sleep and Recovery Take Center Stage
The link between quality sleep and effective recovery is well-documented, so it’s no surprise that this synergy will remain a top trend in 2025.
Fitness enthusiasts are shifting their focus beyond workouts, prioritizing recovery and optimizing their energy.
According to Stephan Muller, GCC marketing director of Whoop, better sleep is essential for recovery and performance. "It’s not just about more sleep—it’s about improving recovery, energy, and consistency through better-quality rest," says Muller.
Recent surveys back this up. Data from Premier Inn Middle East and Silentnight Arabia revealed that over 40% of respondents don’t get enough quality sleep.
Meanwhile, Whoop’s data notes that the UAE ranks third-lowest in sleep performance among its global users, trailing only Singapore and India.
Healing Practices on the Rise
Rest and recovery aren’t limited to improving sleep patterns. According to Suzi Curtis, an Abu Dhabi-based master health and wellness trainer, mindfulness and calming wellness practices will continue to gain momentum.
"People are realizing that a high-intensity lifestyle isn't sustainable,” says Curtis. “With the pace of technology, many now seek ways to switch off and reconnect with themselves."
Curtis predicts a growing interest in practices such as meditation, yoga, breathwork, and Somatics—a technique that fosters mind-body awareness.
High-intensity fitness enthusiasts, ranging from boxers to weightlifters, are increasingly turning towards these healing practices, shifting their focus inward rather than relying on traditional strenuous activities.
The Continued Rise of Hyrox
For those who thrive on challenges, Hyrox—a hybrid fitness race emphasizing endurance and functional strength—will remain a major trend in 2025.
Launched in Germany in 2017, Hyrox features a series of endurance tasks interspersed with 1km runs, all designed to push both physical and mental limits. Its popularity has exploded worldwide, including in the UAE.
Luka Sink, manager at F45 Dubai Motor City, sees Hyrox as a rising star in fitness trends. “Shorter sessions under 60 minutes, combined with mobility and flexibility exercises, are becoming the norm, while Hyrox events continue to grab attention,” he notes.
With events expanding across 11 countries and over 30 cities, Hyrox is expected to grow further. Sink shares that F45 is launching a 12-week prep program ahead of their next Hyrox race in Sharjah this coming April.
Fitness as a Social Connection
Group fitness is seeing a resurgence as community building becomes a central focus of wellness routines. Classes and activities like running clubs and padel tennis are helping bridge social gaps while improving health.
Strava’s “Year in Sport 2024” report highlights this trend, revealing that 58% of respondents built friendships through group fitness, and nearly 20% of Gen Z respondents even went on dates with people they met during workouts.
"Fitness isn’t just an individual pursuit anymore,” says Muller. “With technology and community-driven approaches, fitness is becoming a way to foster deeper connections, whether through group exercises or fitness tracking devices."
Group Fitness Trends—Running Clubs and Padel Tennis
For those who prefer group activities, running clubs and padel tennis are trending choices. Strava reports a 59% increase in running club participation globally, alongside a notable rise in activities involving 10 or more people, compared to solo efforts.
Muller adds that padel tennis is increasingly popular in cities like Dubai and Riyadh. Its mix of endurance, strategy, and recovery appeals to many, with wearable tech helping players fine-tune performance and recovery.
Furthermore, walking and running continue to rank among the top fitness activities in the GCC region. With the rise of walking and running clubs, more people are turning to these simple yet effective ways to stay active.
A More Holistic Fitness Future
These trends reflect a shift towards holistic, community-focused approaches to fitness—blending physical health, mental wellness, and social connection.
The evolution of these practices demonstrates a growing desire for individuals to pursue healthier, more balanced lifestyles.
By combining high-performance workouts with moments of calm and mindfulness, the fitness trends of 2025 highlight a future not only focused on physical health but also on fostering meaningful connections and enhancing overall well-being.
