Kuwait has been identified as the Arab country with the highest obesity rates and ranks tenth globally, with 45.3% of its population classified as obese, according to dermatologist and obesity expert Dr. Mohammad Al Qasimi.
Referring to a recent World Obesity Federation report, Dr. Al Qasimi expressed concern over Kuwait's escalating obesity crisis, which he attributes to poor dietary habits, increased fast-food consumption, and a sedentary lifestyle.
The issue is not limited to adults; data from 2023 shows that obesity affects 34.4% to 40.6% of boys and 26.6% to 28.3% of girls aged 9 to 13 in Kuwaiti schools.
Dr. Al Qasimi stressed that obesity should not be dismissed as a mere lifestyle choice but recognized as a chronic condition impacting almost half of Kuwait’s population.
He explained how obesity can disrupt the hormonal and immune systems, leading to serious metabolic complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular diseases.
One key factor, he noted, is the malfunction of leptin—a hormone responsible for controlling appetite and metabolism.
When the body develops leptin resistance, it fails to recognize signals of fullness, resulting in overeating and further weight gain.
This growing issue is exacerbated by limited awareness surrounding the severe health risks associated with obesity.
Dr. Al Qasimi remarked that the obesity epidemic is no longer just a personal matter but a national public health crisis.
Impacts on Skin and Hormonal Health
Dr. Al Qasimi also shed light on lesser-known consequences of obesity, particularly its connections to 17 different skin conditions.
Obesity-induced chronic inflammation, stemming from elevated leptin levels, has been linked to conditions such as psoriasis, delayed wound healing, and bacterial infections.
Mechanical stress from excess weight, like increased pressure on the feet, contributes to issues such as cracked soles and varicose veins.
Complications extend further, with obesity being associated with hair loss, acne, and hormonal imbalances that exacerbate both skin and systemic health issues.
Elevated obesity rates in Kuwait have also been tied to higher incidences of illnesses such as scleroderma, lupus, and even skin cancer.
Urgent Action Needed
Dr. Al Qasimi stressed the need for immediate action to tackle the obesity epidemic in Kuwait, advocating for initiatives that encourage healthier lifestyles and public health campaigns aimed at reducing obesity rates.
He also highlighted the potential of innovative treatments targeting the hormonal and inflammatory pathways of obesity as a promising solution to address the crisis.
“The moment to act is now,” Dr. Al Qasimi emphasized.
“Without prompt and sustained measures, obesity will continue to harm Kuwait’s population, placing immense pressure on healthcare systems and jeopardizing the quality of life for future generations.”
