Harry Amos, a former British soldier living in Dubai, is set to run over 630 kilometers across the UAE to raise awareness for diabetes.
Beginning his journey on January 31, Amos aims to complete the seven-emirates challenge in just six days, a feat that could break the Guinness World Record for the fastest time.
Amos, a consultant and endurance athlete in training, will run from Fujairah to the border of Saudi Arabia. Through this challenge, he hopes to draw attention to the alarming rise of diabetes in the UAE and worldwide.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, diabetes currently affects more than 540 million people globally, with the number expected to increase to 643 million by 2030.
In the UAE, 12.3% of adults are living with the condition, and this percentage is projected to grow due to factors like rapid economic development, sedentary lifestyles, and poor dietary habits.
"I’m undertaking this challenge to promote health through exercise and personal achievement, with all funds raised going toward diabetes treatment," Amos said.
"My goal is to inspire people to get active, take control of their health, and combat this epidemic."
Amos’ endeavor is being supported by Healthpoint and Mubadala Health Dubai, both part of the M42 group.
These organizations will provide Amos with extensive medical support, including a team of sports medicine specialists and physiotherapists who will accompany him during the event.
Dr. Hasan Baydoun, a consultant orthopedic surgeon and head of Healthpoint and Mubadala Health Dubai’s orthopedic department, praised Amos’ efforts.
"This initiative not only showcases impressive physical endurance but also brings much-needed awareness to an urgent health crisis," he said.
"Our partnership reflects our ongoing dedication to preventive healthcare and using advanced medical technologies to encourage healthier lifestyles across the UAE."
Amos expressed gratitude to M42 for ensuring his safety and well-being throughout the challenge, emphasizing their joint commitment to raising awareness about diabetes.
"Together, we’re tackling an issue that impacts 1 in 5 people in the UAE," he said.
Amos’ six-day challenge will begin this Friday, covering all seven emirates—Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman, Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi.
