When it comes to gym behavior, some people are more mindful than others.
Based on her findings, Van der Westhuizen highlights some of the most annoying habits gym-goers encounter:
- Recording videos: Other gym users generally prefer not to be caught on camera.
- Leaving equipment scattered after use instead of returning it to its designated spot.
- Equipment hogging—especially when you’re not actively using it.
- Dropping weights loudly, disrupting others’ sessions.
- Unsolicited workout advice from fellow gym-goers who assume your routine is wrong.
- Singing loudly and off-key while wearing headphones.
Additionally, Van der Westhuizen shared insights from a personal trainer who identified some other irritating behaviors:
- Not tidying up workout spaces after finishing a session.
- Talking louder than the music in group classes, disrupting personal trainers' instructions.
- Rudeness toward gym staff, which creates a negative atmosphere.
If none of these habits sound familiar, congratulations! You’re doing a fantastic job of being a respectful and non-disruptive gym-goer. Keep it up!
