If you’ve ever wondered about the intense groundwork in a UFC fight where the punches stop and the meticulous chess match starts, you’ve likely seen grappling in action.

This weekend, Abu Dhabi takes a bold step further into combat sports with the debut of its inaugural World Grappling Championship.

From August 1 to 3, the ADNEC Centre in Al Ain will transform into an international arena, hosting hundreds of athletes from over 60 countries.

Whether you’re unfamiliar with grappling or already well-versed in techniques like chokeholds and heel hooks, this three-day championship promises adrenaline-filled action.

It’s open to male and female competitors across all categories, catering to ages from under-14s to masters, and welcoming both amateurs and professionals.

“This event underscores the UAE’s leadership in hosting elite combat sports, offering a platform for athletes worldwide to excel,” said Tareq Al Bahri, General Manager of International Vision Sports Management.

What is Grappling?

Part of the same family as jiu-jitsu, judo, and wrestling, grappling is a form of close-contact combat with no punches or kicks.

Instead, fighters aim to bring their opponent to the ground, maintain control, and apply holds or submissions to achieve a tap-out.

It’s a test of strength, strategy, and endurance, making it one of the fastest-growing sports globally.

High Stakes and Fierce Competition

The championship is a key part of the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro Tour, offering fighters a shot at 2,000 ranking points and significant cash prizes.

Day one kicks off with professional matches and semi-finals, followed by youth and amateur divisions on day two. The event concludes with third-place playoffs and electrifying final bouts.

A Growing Spotlight on Al Ain

Hosting the World Grappling Championship in Al Ain is a strategic move to highlight the city’s importance within Abu Dhabi’s sporting calendar.

Saeed Al Dhaheri of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism remarked, “Combat sports are becoming a vital pillar of Abu Dhabi’s vision for sport and entertainment as the emirate cements its place as a global hub for major sporting events.”

While Al Ain is typically celebrated for its serene palm trees and cool mountain air, this August it transforms into a battlefield for one of the most technical and demanding sports in existence.

If you’ve never witnessed the artistry of a finely executed armbar or the sheer precision of a full takedown, now is your time to experience the action firsthand.
