Abu Dhabi: A recent survey has shown a rise in physical activity levels in the emirate, climbing to 50.16% from the prior 36%.
On Friday, the Department of Community Development (DCD) in Abu Dhabi released findings from the second Sports and Physical Activity Survey, which studies community habits and trends in this area.
The survey highlighted an increase in the average rate of physical activity to 50.16%, up from 36% in the initial survey, aligning with the World Health Organization's (WHO) guidelines and recommendations.
The WHO advises adults to engage in at least 75 minutes of vigorous activity or 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly.
Increased Participation
The DCD also noted that participation in this latest round surged by over 92% compared to the first survey, with 19,289 participants from a variety of societal segments and categories.
Additionally, 38% of individuals with disabilities met WHO's weekly physical activity standards, a significant increase from 12% in the previous survey cycle.
Promoting a Healthy Society
Mohamed Helal Al Balooshi, Executive Director of the Community Engagement and Sports Sector at the DCD, emphasized the department's commitment to fostering a healthy and active society.
He encouraged community members to lead active lifestyles, contributing to a culture of sports and wellness in the community.
Noticeable Progress
Al Balooshi remarked, “The second Sports and Physical Activity Survey builds on the success of the first in examining physical activity patterns in the emirate.
The results reveal a noticeable improvement in sports and fitness interest, with a rise in physical activity rates surpassing 50%, as well as increased survey participation to over 19,000 individuals.”
Supportive Initiatives
Al Balooshi highlighted how, since its inception, the DCD has bolstered the physical activity landscape within the emirate.
By developing supportive policies, empowering sports institutions, enhancing facility access, and launching initiatives, the department aims to instill a health-conscious culture in Abu Dhabi.
Sporting Events
He acknowledged the efforts of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council in organizing local sports events and hosting international competitions,
generating a positive impact across diverse cultural segments and boosting physical activity in the emirate.
He also highlighted the council’s recognition at the Middle East and North Africa Stevie Awards 2023, including accolades for the Abu Dhabi 360 and Active Hub programs.
Quality of Life Enhancement
Ahmed Al Hosani, Executive Director of Strategic Planning & Excellence Sector at the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, asserted the council’s dedication to leading projects that foster a healthy community in Abu Dhabi.
These efforts encourage healthy living, enhancing the overall Quality of Life index.
He stated, “The Sports and Physical Activity Survey, now in its second phase, has expanded on the first phase’s success in studying physical activity trends in Abu Dhabi, with evident improvements in public interest in sports and health."
“This interest translates into the increased average rate of physical activity, supported by community events and tournaments organized under the council’s supervision, achieving significant success.”
Survey Highlights
Key survey outcomes revealed that 11.08% of children and adolescents engage in 60 minutes of daily physical activity, and 70% of individuals with disabilities participate in sports events.
Furthermore, 40% of participants reported regular walking or running, with football being the most popular sport at 25% and swimming at 18%.
57% of those surveyed use sports facilities such as fitness clubs, parks, and designated walking and jogging paths.
Meanwhile, 59% gather information about sports rules, techniques, equipment, and safety from the internet, with 25% relying on trainers and specialists. Additionally, 76% expressed satisfaction with the quality of sports facilities.
