A Chinese doctor who managed to lose 25 kilograms in just 42 days has become a social media sensation after earning several awards at a bodybuilding competition, according to the South China Morning Post.
Wu Tiangen, a 31-year-old surgeon from Zhongnan Hospital at Wuhan University, decided to change his lifestyle after gaining weight from his demanding, sedentary routine at the hospital.
Determined to set a positive example for his patients, he made his health and fitness a top priority.
Bodybuilding Champion
Wu’s remarkable transformation led to his participation in the Tianrui Cup Fitness and Bodybuilding Match held in Guangdong province this January.
Competing as the only doctor among the participants, Wu—who stands 182cm tall and weighs 73.5kg—secured top honors in both the newcomer and fit models categories.
He was also crowned the most popular participant by the contest organizers, Tianrui Culture, as reported by People’s Daily.
Wu sees bodybuilding as an extension of his medical work, where he specializes in treating obese patients through surgical procedures. However, he hasn’t always maintained a fit physique.
A lack of exercise and unhealthy eating habits led to him being diagnosed with a fatty liver in 2023, with his weight reaching a peak of 97.5kg. Concerned about his health, he committed to turning his life around.
"If I can’t save myself, how can I save others?" Wu stated about his motivation.
Intense Fitness Routine
To achieve his goals, Wu followed a disciplined fitness plan focused on fat loss and muscle gain.
His daily routine includes two hours of exercise—an aerobic session at 5:30 a.m. and a workout after his shift at the hospital. Before competitive events, Wu steps up his regimen to four hours of daily training.
Wu’s coach, Shi Fan, a highly accomplished Chinese athlete and IFBB World Fit Model champion, commended Wu’s work ethic, emphasizing that his training intensity even exceeds that of many professional athletes.
Inspiring His Patients
Wu’s transformation serves as motivation for his patients, encouraging them to trust scientific approaches to weight loss.
Over the years, he has guided approximately 100 individuals in their weight-loss journeys and remains a staunch advocate for sustainable fitness practices.
“You need a long-term plan for weight loss and must stick to it,” he shared. “I don’t support extreme, short-term diets that require eating very little.
A healthy lifestyle combines proper sleep, a well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and a stress-free mindset.”
