Dreading the Gym During Recovery

Members of a cancer rehabilitation exercise program have shared how it has supported them during their recovery or ongoing treatment.

The group, which meets at the Riverside Leisure Centre in Norwich, is supported by the Big C charity and is believed to be the first initiative of its kind in Norfolk.

Steve Stone, 65, explained that while he was interested in exercising, he “hated the idea of going to a gym” before joining the sessions.

“It’s motivated me to start thinking about doing some exercise on my own, potentially even in a gym setting," Steve, a Norwich resident, shared.

He mentioned enjoying the company of “like-minded people” in a relaxed and supportive environment.

The weekly sessions include an hour of light circuit training with equipment like rowing machines and treadmills, followed by a social time with tea or coffee.

Another participant, Nell, shared her experience, noting that she had always been active but found recovery challenging after cancer treatment.

“Anyone who has undergone chemotherapy understands how much core strength you lose, and many of us suffer from nerve damage. I was constantly tripping and falling,” she explained.

“I tried the gym during my recovery and pushed myself too hard trying to regain fitness after chemo—this class was exactly what I needed," she said.

“A lot of cancer support groups are fantastic and effective, but they can feel somber. This program works well for people who want a different, proactive approach.”

Pam Jackson, 70, from Attleborough, said she joined the classes after battling breast cancer twice.

“The group includes men and women of all ages, shapes, and fitness levels," she said.

“We’re all at different stages of cancer or recovery, but we share laughs and set personalized goals. Each week, I try to push myself a little further.”

The classes are led by fitness instructor David Lane, who is also trained as a cancer rehabilitation practitioner.

David shared that creating such a group was something he had “always wanted to do.”

“The Big C approached me to start the group. We were able to secure some funding, and that’s how it all began," he explained.

The sessions are scheduled to run until Christmas, with plans to seek additional funding to continue the program into the new year.
