The UAE is turning movement into a national priority, and Dubai is at the center of this shift.
A new UAE Health and Fitness Industry Report from Dubai Active Industry, produced with Qantara Sports and IEG Middle East, shows a sector that is growing fast and becoming more sophisticated every year.
Government strategies, population growth and a strong appetite for premium training experiences are reshaping how people in Dubai and across the UAE move, train and take care of their health.
1. Why fitness is now a national priority in the UAE
The report highlights a clear trend: the UAE is deliberately positioning itself as a global hub for health, wellness and sport.
Several national initiatives are pushing residents to be more active:
-
Dubai Fitness Challenge (DFC) encourages everyone in the city to complete 30 minutes of activity for 30 days each year. Recent editions have broken participation records, with more than 2.7 million people joining in 2024 and hundreds of thousands taking part in flagship events like the Dubai Run.
-
National Sports Strategy 2031 aims to increase the share of people regularly practicing sport to about 71 percent of the population and to build a stronger, more professional sports ecosystem.
At the same time, lifestyle diseases remain a concern. Obesity and diabetes affect roughly one in five adults in the UAE, and international data sets estimate diabetes prevalence at just over 20 percent of adults.
These health challenges, combined with proactive government policy, are directly fueling the growth of the Dubai fitness industry.
2. A closer look at the UAE fitness market
Premium, mid-market and budget segments
Survey data from gyms, studios and wellness centers across the UAE shows a clear tilt toward higher-value services:
-
55% of operators say they sit in the premium pricing segment.
-
43% identify as mid-market.
-
Only 7% position themselves as budget operators.
This pricing structure suggests most residents who want basic access to equipment are using the gyms in their residential buildings, which are widespread in the UAE. That leaves commercial operators to focus on more specialized, higher-value services.
Dubai leads the country’s fitness landscape
Dubai remains the clear heavyweight of the UAE fitness market:
-
Around 80% of operators in the report are based in Dubai.
-
Abu Dhabi is the second-strongest market.
-
Sharjah is emerging quickly as a growing fitness destination.
For anyone living in the city, that concentration means access to a large variety of gyms in Dubai across different price points, training styles and locations.
3. From traditional gyms to hybrid wellness hubs
Only about 24% of operators still function as classic, “equipment-only” gyms. The other 76% have evolved into hybrid models that combine several services under one roof.
These may include:
-
Boutique group training studios
-
Strength and conditioning spaces
-
Recovery and wellness services (sauna, ice baths, massage)
-
Nutrition coaching and body-composition tracking
-
Performance-focused classes such as HYROX or functional training
For members, this means a single membership can cover strength, cardio, community classes and wellness experiences, rather than needing separate subscriptions across different sites.
4. Real estate, home gyms and community design
The report also points to a major shift in how neighbourhoods are being built. New residential communities and towers are increasingly designed with wellbeing in mind:
-
More apartments and villas are being delivered with in-home gyms or dedicated training spaces.
-
Shared gyms in towers and compounds have become a standard expectation rather than a premium extra.
-
Community masterplans now integrate running tracks, cycling paths, outdoor gyms and sports courts into their layouts.
For residents, this means that daily movement is becoming easier to integrate into normal life, whether that is a quick session in the building gym, a walk along a shaded jogging path or a group workout in a nearby park.
5. Women-focused services and inclusive fitness
Cultural awareness and accessibility are central themes in the UAE fitness market:
-
52% of operators offer some type of women-focused service, such as ladies-only areas, female-only classes or entire clubs dedicated to women.
-
However, 41% of operators still do not provide any ladies-only provision, which shows there is room to grow in this area.
Creating safe, comfortable and culturally appropriate spaces for women is not just about inclusion. It also unlocks a major growth opportunity for operators who can combine privacy and comfort with high training quality.
6. Corporate wellness and the workplace opportunity
The UAE’s workforce is another key driver of fitness growth. According to the report, 88% of companies in the UAE plan to expand their corporate wellness programs.
That expansion typically includes:
-
Subsidised or fully funded gym memberships
-
On-site or near-site fitness facilities
-
Regular wellness challenges and activity campaigns
-
Health screenings and educational sessions
For HR teams and business leaders, partnering with a gym on corporate gym membership can support productivity, reduce absenteeism and position the company as an employer that genuinely cares about staff wellbeing.
For employees, this trend simply means more opportunities to train at low or no additional cost.
7. What separates winning operators in Dubai’s fitness industry
The report describes a market with engaged members, clear segmentation and strong growth potential, but also one where competition is intensifying.
Operators that tend to succeed in Dubai and across the UAE usually excel in several areas at once:
-
Location strategy
-
Operational excellence
-
Clean, well-maintained facilities
-
Reliable equipment and smart layout
-
Smooth check-in, membership management and customer service
-
Pricing sophistication
-
Clear, transparent pricing
-
Flexible contracts and family or corporate options
-
Offering real value at each price point, from budget to premium
-
Service innovation
-
Hybrid offerings that combine strength, conditioning, group classes and recovery
-
Technology integration such as apps, wearables and digital coaching
-
Personalization through assessments, progress tracking and tailored programs
-
Solving real consumer pain points
-
Weather: providing comfortable indoor training environments during extreme heat.
-
Cost: offering memberships that match different budgets and using corporate partnerships to reduce barriers.
-
Time: shorter, more efficient workouts and convenient locations close to home or work.
8. How residents can benefit from the boom
Whether you are already training regularly or just getting started, the current growth of the Dubai fitness industry can work in your favor:
-
Use your building or community facilities. If your residence has a gym or outdoor fitness space, treat it like part of your daily routine rather than an occasional extra.
-
Explore nearby commercial gyms. With so many operators in Dubai, you can usually find a club that matches your training style, schedule and budget.
-
Join city-wide initiatives. Events like the Dubai Fitness Challenge or the Dubai Run are a great way to stay motivated and connect with the wider community.
-
Ask your employer about wellness benefits. If your company is part of the 88 percent planning to expand wellness programs, there may already be gym partnerships or incentives you can use.
The combination of strong government support, serious health goals and a rapidly maturing fitness market means there has never been a better time to build a consistent training routine in Dubai and across the UAE.
