A month-long fitness initiative that transformed Dubai’s shopping malls into indoor running tracks has concluded with a major global achievement.
The Dubai Mallathon, which ran throughout August 2025, not only saw over 40,000 participants but also set a new Guinness World Record for the most runners in a mall run event, underscoring the city's status as a hub for community sports.
Record-Breaking Finale
Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the Mallathon wrapped up on Sunday, September 1, 2025.
The final event, hosted at Dubai Hills Mall, drew 1,392 runners, officially securing the world record.
This historic moment was the culmination of a 31-day campaign across nine major Dubai malls, including The Dubai Mall and Festival Plaza.
These retail spaces were converted into safe, air-conditioned running tracks, open daily from 7:00 am to 10:00 am.
Throughout the month, participants collectively logged over 120 million steps, making the Mallathon one of Dubai’s largest community fitness movements to date.

Expanded Annual Event Planned
Following this year's incredible success, the Dubai Mallathon is set to become an annual fixture. Under the directive of Sheikh Hamdan, the event will be extended to a three-month period, running from June 15 to September 15 starting in 2026.
This expanded format aims to boost accessibility and encourage even broader participation across all segments of society, reinforcing Dubai's commitment to making fitness a part of daily life.
A Movement for Youth and Community
The initiative's success garnered praise from government and civic leaders, particularly for its engagement with young people. Dr. Sultan Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, highlighted the event's impact:
“The overwhelming participation of young people, who represented the largest share of participants, reaffirms their pivotal role in the success of community initiatives,” he stated.
“Sport is one of the most powerful platforms through which young people find both inspiration and self-expression.”
The campaign was also supported by youth councils across the UAE, demonstrating nationwide buy-in for its core mission of integrating fitness into everyday life.
Strategic Vision for a Healthier Society
Sponsored by the Ministry of Defence and implemented with the Dubai Sports Council, the Mallathon aligned with national policies like the Dubai Social Agenda 33 and the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033.
Khalfan Belhoul, Vice President of the Dubai Sports Council, credited the achievement to visionary leadership.
“The support and directives of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed were instrumental to the success of the initiative,” he said.
“We will spare no effort in reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global capital for community sports.”
Inclusive Competition and Celebration
The finale included a 42-kilometre marathon featuring 40 runners from various categories. Victor Kiprono took first place, followed by Godfrey Segule.
Notably, Rio Watson, a runner from the People of Determination category, secured third place. All winners received prizes to support their athletic development.
The Mallathon also hosted diverse community events throughout the month, including a special women’s race organized in partnership with the Dubai Sports Council to mark Emirati Women’s Day.
The use of malls as venues provided a comfortable and inclusive environment, enabling people of all fitness levels to participate.
