Hundreds of UK residents have signed up for a self-defense retreat in Dubai, a response to growing fears over phone theft in London.

The initiative comes as Metropolitan Police data reveals over 117,000 mobile phones were stolen in the capital in 2024, often by criminals on bicycles or mopeds.
In response, UAE-based fitness chain GymNation launched a bold advertising campaign across London.
Giant billboards in phone theft hotspots like Hackney and Southwark promoted an "escape" to Dubai for the complimentary retreat.

The campaign, which also included posters in Soho and ad bikes on Oxford Street, has garnered significant attention, resulting in 3,000 QR code scans and over 600 sign-ups since its launch.
Led by top UAE instructor Jason Woodham, the retreat aims to restore Londoners' confidence.
The program combines physical training with stress management and urban awareness workshops, teaching participants how to project calm confidence and de-escalate potential threats.
"It's a misconception that learning self-defense is just about physical aggression," Woodham commented.

"It teaches you vital skills to reclaim your confidence, be more self-aware, and feel empowered. We're not advocating aggression – we're teaching composure."
He added, "When people feel strong, they make better decisions. They run if they must, they speak up when they can, and they stop living like victims."
GymNation's CMO, Rory McEntee, highlighted the campaign's timeliness, noting the Met Police's new focus on tackling the "staggering" theft figures.
"We're not telling people to fight crime with fists – we're telling them to stop surrendering to fear," McEntee said.

"Londoners deserve to feel confident and safe... we created the dedicated self-defence retreat to help restore that confidence." He also pointed to Dubai's reputation as one of the safest cities in the world as an added incentive for participants.
The self-defense retreat runs weekly at GymNation's Al Quoz club in Dubai until December 20.
