Dubai residents are excitedly awaiting the launch of the 'Dubai Walk' project, designed to turn the city into a haven for pedestrians.

Sharing her enthusiasm, long-time Dubai resident Oliv Matol said to Khaleej Times, "Dubai Walk will give me more options for trails and paths, enhancing my walking routine."

The 64-year-old Filipino expat added that safety is a priority during her walks, and a pleasant environment will significantly improve her mental well-being.

The 6,500km network of walkways, spanning 160 areas across the city, was announced last month and aims to strengthen neighborhood connectivity.

By catering to runners, cyclists, and e-scooter users, the initiative encourages active lifestyles and sustainable transport. 'Dubai Walk' seeks to transform urban mobility while improving community engagement and offering safer, more enjoyable routes for outdoor enthusiasts.

The project’s plans include building 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels, 112 km of waterfront pathways, 124 km of green trails, and 150 km of rural and mountainous walking routes.

Why Walking Matters

Laiba Ashfaq, a physiotherapist at Aman Lil Afia Clinic, emphasized the benefits of walking as a simple yet impactful form of exercise. “Walking is easy to fit into any busy schedule.

It doesn’t require equipment, and every small step counts. Starting today can boost both physical and mental health,” she said.

She encourages beginners to start with gentle walks, explaining that walking is easier on joints than other forms of exercise.

It helps strengthen bones, promotes an active lifestyle, and reduces the negative effects of prolonged sitting.

Ashfaq also noted that increased walking spaces could foster healthier communities, benefiting individuals of all ages, including seniors and people with disabilities. Additionally, reducing reliance on cars would minimize traffic and air pollution, supporting a greener environment.

“Walking on designated pathways differs from walking on streets,” she explained. “There are fewer obstacles like parked cars, and the risk of accidents is reduced. Green spaces like parks and lakes allow for cleaner air, unlike walking near busy roads.”

She further highlighted the health benefits of walking. A brisk 30-minute walk daily can lower the risk of heart disease, improve cardiovascular and respiratory function, enhance sleep quality, alleviate stress and anxiety, and aid in weight management.

Safer Mobility

For Freeze, a 42-year-old Chinese expat and avid cyclist, the added tracks connecting to Metro or bus stations would be a valuable improvement for those who rely on public transportation.

The construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels under Dubai Walk aims to boost connectivity, aligning with Dubai’s broader plan to elevate pedestrian and soft mobility from 13% to 25% by 2040.

Similarly, 24-year-old resident Abdalla Abdulrazak believes the project will save fuel. “I’ll be able to walk from home without needing to drive, especially during Ramadan near Iftar, when the roads get crowded,” he shared.

Positive Impact on Mental Health

Apart from physical benefits, Ashfaq pointed out that the Dubai Walk project could greatly enhance mental health.

“Pathways designed near parks and gardens will create tranquil spaces, far removed from traffic noise and pollution. Scenic pedestrian routes surrounded by greenery can relax the mind and alleviate anxiety and stress,” she said.

Ashfaq encouraged people to take up walking, noting its simplicity and accessibility. “Walking requires no special equipment, fits into any schedule, can be done in groups, and is gentle on the joints. It boosts energy levels and encourages an active lifestyle,” she concluded.

By combining safety, accessibility, and a focus on health, the Dubai Walk project is set to redefine how residents move through and experience their city, supporting both physical and mental well-being.
