After a month of fasting during Ramadan, which impacts metabolism, hydration, and nutritional balance, medical experts stress the importance of resetting the body to ensure long-term health.

Dr. Shyam Rajamohan, an Internal Medicine Specialist at Prime Hospital in Dubai, explains that fasting naturally initiates a detox process in the body.

“Fasting causes the body’s metabolism to shift toward burning stored fat for energy, aiding in weight loss and removing unwanted toxins. This process enhances cell repair and boosts digestion,” he noted.

However, as Ramadan concludes, it is crucial to help the body transition back to a regular eating schedule to maintain energy and overall health.

“During fasting, the body adapts to consuming less food at irregular intervals, which can make returning to normal eating habits challenging,” Dr. Rajamohan explained.

He recommended slowly increasing food intake by having 4 to 5 small meals daily to help the body adjust.

“But steer clear of foods high in sugar, fat, and processed ingredients.

Include more leafy greens, proteins, and healthy carbohydrates in your meals.

Also, ensure you drink plenty of water (2–3 liters daily) to help flush the kidneys and restore lost electrolytes and minerals.”

Dr. Rajamohan also emphasized the need to gradually reestablish regular sleep patterns following Ramadan.

“Reverting back to a consistent sleep routine is essential. Wake up early, engage in some exercise, enjoy a nutritious breakfast, and avoid going back to sleep afterward,” he advised.

Health Check-ups After Ramadan

Dr. Soubhi Ayoubi, an Internal Medicine Specialist at Aster Clinic, Halwan, highlighted the importance of a post-Ramadan health screening to identify any potential health concerns caused by fasting.

“Individuals should schedule a health screening within one to two weeks after Ramadan to assess blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes, kidney function, and electrolyte balance,” he said.

These screenings are vital for detecting early signs of health problems, allowing for timely interventions to ensure better health management over time.

“Monitor your blood pressure for any changes, check cholesterol levels for fluctuations, screen for diabetes to identify any issues with glucose regulation, and assess kidney health, particularly for anyone with pre-existing conditions,” Dr. Ayoubi added.

Five Strategies for Long-term Health

Focus on consuming whole, nutrient-rich foods regularly.

  1. Stay Hydrated
