For many, Sunday is a day for sleeping in, enjoying brunch, and gradually preparing for the week ahead. However, for Mark Wahlberg, 2 a.m. on Sunday marks the start of his gym session.
The 53-year-old actor, entrepreneur, and father of four has taken his early-morning workouts to a new level, as shown in a recent Instagram video where he outlines his intense and very early routine.
"My week starts on Sunday🙏2 am 🥶," he shared on Sunday.
Dressed head-to-toe in Municipal apparel — a sportswear brand he co-founded in 2019 — Wahlberg is seen performing various exercises, such as weighted calf raises, chest presses, tricep extensions, and incline pushups.
"We're getting after it," Wahlberg declared.
But should the rest of us be working out at 2 a.m.? Not necessarily.
Chris Pruitt, CEO of WorkoutHealthy.com and a certified personal trainer, explains that Wahlberg's regimen is tailored to his specific lifestyle and isn't ideal for everyone.
"Exercising at 2 a.m. can benefit those with unusual schedules," Pruitt stated.
"It offers a quiet environment, fewer distractions, and a unique sense of discipline and accomplishment. However, it's crucial to ensure you get adequate sleep and recovery time."
Wahlberg claims he gets eight hours of sleep and works out twice daily.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, while looking very fit, he explained, "What time do I go to bed? Eight hours.
Eight hours of sleep, always. If I'm in the gym at 1, that means I went to bed at 5. OK? Do the math."
He credits his early workouts to his demanding schedule, "We're working, we're shooting. If we have to leave at 4, I’ve got to wake up at 1. I gotta get it done."
What does "getting it done" entail for Wahlberg? A mix of spiritual and physical activities.
"I get up, get on my hands and knees, start my prayer, get in that water, then head to the gym," he disclosed. "That’s a must. That happens every single day."
Wahlberg is known for sharing his strict schedule and fitness dedication with his numerous fans. In 2018, he posted his daily routine, which included a 2:30 a.m. wakeup, two workouts, an hour of cryo-chamber recovery, and a 7:30 p.m. bedtime.
Research indicates that morning workouts can boost energy levels, focus, and sleep quality—though studies typically don't examine the benefits of exercising at 2 a.m.
"Generally, the best time to exercise is when you feel most energetic and can maintain consistency," Pruitt told The Post.
"For many, late afternoon or early evening is ideal due to higher body temperature and improved muscle function.
However, morning workouts can boost metabolism and mood for the day ahead."
While Wahlberg thrives on early morning workouts, late afternoon or evening sessions might be better suited to others' circadian rhythms.
Ultimately, consistency is key, regardless of the time you choose to work out.
One study found that people who exercise at the same time each day spend more time working out weekly than those who train at different times.
"It's essential to find a workout time that aligns with a sustainable, healthy lifestyle, ensuring adequate rest and recovery," Pruitt concluded.
