For many individuals, maintaining physical fitness is a personal choice; however, for firefighters in North Dakota, it is a critical necessity.

The Firefighter Rescue Survey, which gathers information from numerous fire rescue incidents, reveals that a first responder's life expectancy decreases by 50% if they spend 10 minutes or more trying to extract someone from a burning building.

Firefighters also face reduced life expectancy when searching for individuals who are unconscious, overweight, or experiencing serious medical issues during a fire emergency.

Firefighters understand the vital role that fitness plays when they suit up for duty.

“Right now, I weigh between 115 and 120 pounds. When I put on my full gear, including air and tools, my weight increases to around 180 to 200 pounds,” explained Ryan Rivas, a firefighter.

In October, Minot firefighters will participate in an agility course designed to simulate real-life situations while fully equipped.
