UAE-based fitness chain GymNation has launched a bold advertising campaign in London, sparking considerable discussion online.
Your ideal gym buddy is…
The campaign offers Londoners a chance to "escape" to Dubai for a complimentary self-defense retreat, a concept positioned as a solution to the city's rising phone theft crisis.
Massive billboards have appeared in high-theft areas like Hackney and Southwark, featuring a QR code with the provocative message: "Scan quick before your phone gets nicked."
The ads invite the public to secure a free spot on the retreat, which aims to help rebuild street confidence.
The campaign has divided public opinion. Some social media users praised the initiative as a necessary wake-up call, while others pointed out the irony of asking people to take out their phones to scan a QR code in a theft hotspot.
One user joked, "They created a phone theft hotspot as everyone scans the QR code." Another questioned if flights and accommodation were included.
Rory McEntee, GymNation's CMO, described the campaign as timely, referencing the Met Police's recent announcement of a new chief dedicated to tackling phone theft.
Official data reveals a sharp increase in "theft-person" offenses in London. This stands in stark contrast to the UAE, which boasts one of the world's lowest crime rates.

McEntee noted, "In Dubai, you can leave your phone on a café table and come back 4 hours later – and it'll still be there. Try doing that in London."
The retreat will be led by Jason Woodham, a top self-defense expert in the UAE. He clarified that the goal isn't to promote aggression but to empower individuals.
"We're not advocating aggression – we're teaching composure," Woodham stated. "When people feel strong, they make better decisions." The program combines physical training with stress management and urban awareness workshops to help participants project confidence and de-escalate threats.
Despite the mixed reactions, GymNation maintains its goal is to help people feel more confident, not to encourage vigilantism. The exclusive retreat begins on November 15th at their Al Quoz club in Dubai.
