Khalid Bin Mohsen Shaari once held the title of the world's heaviest man, weighing in at 610 kg.

However, his life took a dramatic turn when he lost an astounding 542 kg, thanks to the intervention of Saudi Arabia's former King Abdullah.

Shaari's transformation involved a comprehensive treatment plan that included a gastric bypass, a specialized diet, regular exercise, and surgeries to remove excess skin.

Although there were some side effects, his health saw significant improvements.

Previously bedridden for three years due to his weight, Shaari has become virtually unrecognizable at 63 kg.

His incredible weight loss journey earned him the nickname 'the smiling man' from the support staff who aided his transformation.

This remarkable achievement was made possible through King Abdullah's determination to change Shaari's life, funding a full weight loss plan and providing extensive medical care.

A dedicated team of 30 medical professionals transported him from his home in Jazan to King Fahd Medical City in Riyadh for treatment.

Shaari's weight loss regimen began with a gastric bypass surgery, followed by a tailored diet, exercise routine, and physiotherapy over six months, during which he lost half of his body weight.

Subsequent surgeries removed the excess skin, a common result in cases of extreme weight loss.

No longer confined to his bed, Shaari now enjoys life as a happier man, as indicated by the 'smiling man' moniker.

Benefits of Extensive Weight Loss

"Weight loss exceeding 500 kg, as seen in Khalid Bin Mohsen Shaari's case, prompts substantial physiological changes throughout the body.

Typically, cardiovascular health improves significantly, with reduced blood pressure, better lipid profiles, and decreased cardiac stress.

There are also notable metabolic benefits, such as enhanced insulin sensitivity and improved glucose regulation, sometimes reversing type 2 diabetes.

Respiratory function often shows major improvements, with increased lung capacity and a reduced risk of sleep-related breathing issues," explains Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant in Internal Medicine at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals.

Side Effects of Rapid Weight Loss

Despite the numerous benefits of losing a large amount of weight, rapid weight loss can lead to various health challenges.

"Shedding over 100 kg, not to mention 500 kg, can cause fluid, salt, and electrolyte imbalances, resulting in muscle loss, protein and calorie malnutrition, and deficiencies in enzymes and minerals.

Consequently, patients may experience chronic fatigue, lethargy, mood swings, and general weakness," notes Dr. Manish Joshi, Additional Director of Surgical Gastroenterology, Bariatric and Robotic Surgery at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru.

Managing such significant weight loss requires a multidisciplinary team of experts.

Continuous medical monitoring is crucial to assess the patient's nutrition, electrolyte balance, and organ health. Additionally, emotional support plays a vital role in helping patients adapt to their new physical state and lifestyle changes.
