Real Madrid announced on Monday that forward Vinícius Júnior has suffered a left hamstring injury, ruling him out of the crucial Champions League group stage match against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Sources informed ESPN that Madrid is hopeful the Brazilian international will recover within three to four weeks.
The 24-year-old played the full 90 minutes in the team's 3-0 league victory over Leganés, with coach Carlo Ancelotti not indicating any injury concerns after the match.
Following the announcement, Vinícius posted on social media, criticizing the demanding football schedule, calling it "crazy."
Vinícius had only just returned to Madrid on Thursday after participating in Brazil’s international fixtures against Venezuela and Uruguay, which ended in draws.
Reflecting on the match, Ancelotti commented, "Mbappé was fresher than Vinícius.
He performed very well with his goal after an excellent assist from Vini. Step by step, the two are improving."
On Sunday, Vinícius switched offensive roles with Kylian Mbappé during Madrid's match. He is now set to miss several upcoming games, including the trip to Liverpool.
Madrid needs a victory at Anfield on Wednesday, having already suffered two defeats in four Champions League fixtures this season.
Currently second in LaLiga, four points behind Barcelona with a game in hand, Real Madrid also has the FIFA Club World Cup scheduled for next month.
Mbappé, who scored Madrid's first goal on Sunday with an assist from Vinícius, discussed their growing partnership on the field. "Vini Jr. and I understand each other very well," he said.
"We share a strong connection, and he’s an incredible player. With the best players here, we’re ready to secure more wins and trophies."
Vinícius has been in excellent form this season, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists in 18 league appearances for Real Madrid.
